NPP UK and Ireland Salute Nana Abu Bonsra

The New Patriotic Party, UK and Ireland Branch would like to congratulate the MP elect for Fomena for winning and retaining the seat on behalf of NPP. Nana Abu Bonsra who won the poll with a margin of more than 7,000 has proved with his victory that the NPP has kept faith with the good people of Fomena.

The UK branch would also like to thank the local party executives and the good people of Fomena for their sterling job. We would also like to thank the NDC and DFP candidates for their good fight. The National Executive Committee led by the Party Chairman Mr. Mac Manu deserve special praise in not taking things for granted and finally the President for his reinforcement visits to ensure that no stone was left unturned. The bye election has shown how the people of Fomena have been discerning in realising that the only party of government which offers choice and good value for money is the NPP. This choice is evidenced in the quality of leadership of the Party and its President in government.

The recent Annual Delegates Conference at Koforidua stressed on the need for the Party to move “forward in unity” and the only outcome of such a focus is such as demonstrated in Fomena victory. The NPP no doubt has kept faith with the good people of Ghana but we in NPP UK believe that all our efforts from 2001 to date will be in vain if we do not live the objectives of Koforidua [Moving Forward in Unity]. We therefore advise the Party to direct its strength and effort away from the “presidential aspiration” and instead concentrate on support for the government in implementing its programmes, the only legacy that can ensure successful succession in 2008.

The Party in government has demonstrated good fiscal policies which have put Ghana firmly on the path to economic stability, even in the face of the fluctuating world oil prices. The political and socio-economic development embarked on by the NPP administration has caught the attention of the entire world. The visiting Mayor of London, Mr Alderman John Stuttard, on Tuesday commended Ghana for her impressive political and socio-economic development and stressed the need for the Government to work hard to consolidate the achievements made for the benefit of the citizenry. In his words, "Ghana's exhibition of good governance, integrity and successful democratic dispensation is the best in Africa in recent times especially among emerging economies." The Party in government has also demonstrated its commitment to effective and compassionate social programmes aimed at investing in the people of Ghana. These policies manifest themselves in the educational and health reforms as well as micro financing aimed at putting money in the pocket of the average Ghanaian.

As a branch we call on the government and Party to consolidate the gains in Ofinso and Fomena and replicate this effort all over the country in the run up to 2008 and insha Allah the victory will be ours.

The NPP UK would finally like to thank the Ghanaians in UK and Ireland for their continued support and their words of encouragement, especially in the run up to this bye election. We would also like to thank the media here in UK especially Rainbow, WBLS, Kasapa, Hot, GFM and Afrique Fm for their role in educating Ghanaians about political development in Ghana. We thank you all.

Hayford Atta-Krufi Chairman, on behalf of NPP UK & Ireland
