Miss Ghana in Italy 2007

… 22 contestants vying for the crown

Come Saturday, 27th October, in the main auditorium of the Trade Fair site in Vicenza, the story on Miss Ghana in Italy will be re-written.

Twenty-two Ghanaian women (sorry, ladies) will be vying for the enviable crown of Miss Ghana in Italy 2007 Beauty Contest. The euphoria surrounding this year’s competition is better to be seen than described and it is expected to live up to its billing. Everything about it is pointing to a contest that will reveal more than what was seen in the previous competition last year.

Speaking in an interview on the competition, the General Secretary of Council of Ghanaian Nationals Association in Italy and Secretary of Ghana Association in Vicenza, Gilbert Abasimi, said: “We have 22 contestants representing almost all the regions in Italy and have been able to send the campaign far and wide.” “Miss Ghana in Italy “, he continued, “is a launching pad for the Ghanaian community in Italy to put into place strong and well organised cultural activities. We prospect it to be much better than the one held last year in Udine. People complained about the judging but this year we have judges who are not resident in Italy and therefore do not even know the contestants and will give their own perspective”.

Special guest of honour is the Ghana Ambassador to Italy, His Excellency Charles Agyei-Amoama who will be present with his wife, Charity Agyei-Amoama. Also expected is the Minister for Consular Affairs at the Ghana Embassy in Rome, Hon. Jonathan Bartels-Kodwo. Ghanaian football stars - Asamoah Gyan and Mike Edusei - who ply their trade with Italian football clubs, are also expected to grace the occasion with their presence.

The event has got a lot of support from the Ghana Embassy in Rome who have followed all the planning activities and given a lot of advice.

The General Secretary of COGNAI again commented: “Miss Ghana in Italy is a platform for Ghanaian ladies to portray their talent, character, beauty and their country’s culture thereby attracting the potential marketing and opportunities available for jobs and other vacancy that a lady might vie for. It’s also a grand entertainment activity that will bring the Ghanaian community together in good spirit,” he added. He mentioned in his comments that the Council of Ghanaian Nationals Association in Italy (COGNAI) which is hosting the show is over taxing itself economically to organise the event. “We have got a bit of support from some of our sponsors and we hope other benevolent organisations and good spirited individuals will come to assist,” he said.

Contestants would be appearing before the audience in a casual wear of their choice, Ghana’s traditional ‘kente’ cloth, beach costume, occasional wear and they are expected to convince the judges they have some talent in singing, dancing, poetry, drama or any other. They must also in addition give their measurement and be eloquent as they say some few words to the audience.

Fantastic premiums ranging from a return trip ticket to Ghana, computer, electro-domestic equipments will be won. All contestants will receive consolation prizes.

As a side attraction, Psalmpong, the now celebrated gospel music artiste in Italy and also making an impact in Ghana among other places, will treat the audience with his soul-inspiring songs. Also appearing is Oboy Sika, the Italy-based Ghanaian hip-life singer who is also making a name for himself with his music. Italian music would not be left out of the expected excitement and top star, Calabrese, among his other associates will pour out their songs to the audience.
