Home-Call Announcement -Dr. Bonney

The North America Mission of the Methodist Church Ghana, on behalf of all its 40 Missionary Societies in the US and Canada, sorrowfully regret to announce the sudden home-call, on June 29, 2013, of their beloved Dr. George Ebow Bonney. He was 65. According to his daughter, Aba Kwawu, Dr. Bonney suffered a heart attack and died at the Medstar Montgomery Medical Center in Olney, Maryland.

Dr. Bonney was born in Mumford in the Central Region of Ghana. He was a pillar of strength in the growth and expansion of the Methodist Church Ghana in the United States and Canada. Ebow was the Choirmaster/Music Director of the Calvary Redeeming Methodist Church in Rockville, Maryland.

He graduated from the University of Ghana in 1972 from where he also received a master’s degree in genetics in 1976. He received a doctorate in biostatistics and genetics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1981.The late Dr. Bonney was a Professor of Community Health and Family Medicine at the Howard University in Washington DC. He was also the Director of the Statistical Genetics and the Bioinformatics Unit of the National Human Genome Center of the Howard University.

Among his brilliant and distinguished professional and academic laurels and the prominent positions held were the Chairman of the Department of Biostatistics at the Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, PA., Associate Professor of Biometry and Genetics at the Louisiana State University Medical Center in New Orleans, LA. Dr. Bonney very prominently served on the National Human Genome Research Institute, and also on the Advisory Board of Genetic Epidemiology, as well as on the Board of Directors of the American Statistical Association. He was the recipient of the coveted Tenth Annual George W. Sender Award sponsored jointly by the America Statistical Association and the Biometrics Societies of North America, for the best published work in biometry in any journal in North America.

A great tree has indeed fallen. The family, the academia, the scientific community, the Methodist Church Ghana, the congregation of Calvary Redeeming Methodist Church and the Ghanaian communities in North America are the worst for this irreplaceable loss.

Dr. George Ebow Bonney, may your faith in Almighty God guide your soul through to Heaven. As the curtain draw finally tomorrow, Friday 2nd August 2013 to remove your mortal remains from our sight not from our memories. Damirifa Due…. Due ne Amanehunu.

Traditional Rites: 9:00pm to 12:00 (At Armour J. Blackburn Center – Howard University Campus) SATURDAY, August 2, 2013 Burial Service: 9:00am to10:00am – Calvary Redeeming Methodist Church (13016 Parkland Drive, Rockville MD 20853) Internment: 10:30am – Parklawn Memorial Park – 12800 Veirs Mills Rd, Rockville MD Repast:12:00 noon – Calvary Redeeming Methodist Church SUNDAY, August 2, 2013 Thanksgiving Service: 1:00pm – Calvary Redeeming Methodist Church
