Ghanaian gets top appointment in Canada

Accra, Jan. 22, GNA- The Government of Saskatchewan in Canada has appointed Ms. Elizabeth Quarshie (nee Kotey) as the Deputy Minister of Environment, it was announced on Tuesday.

Prior to her appointment, she served as a Board Member on the National Energy Board of Canada and also participated in the development of performance measures on energy, electricity, mines, oil and gas, environment and sustainable development.

In a statement released in Accra, Ms. Quarshie also served as both a Panel Member and Chairman for the National Energy Board and adjudicated on multimillion dollar projects, including the construction and operation of inter provincial and international pipelines and power lines.

"She prepared and presented the rulings on applications following hearings on multimillion to billion dollar projects and participated in the development of Board positions on significant energy issues". According to the statement, Ms. Quarshie had published 47 research articles and her latest articles entitled "A Regulator's Perspective of the Challenges Facing the Pipeline Industry "was published in the Global Pipeline Monthly, an international Energy journal in the United Kingdom.

Commenting on Ms. Quarshie appointment, Ken Kravetz, Deputy Premier of Saskatchewan asserted that her appointment was based on her qualifications and extensive experience in the energy and mine field. Ms Quarshie was born at Koforidua, Ghana and attended Aburi Girls Secondary in 1968. She holds a graduate degree in Environmental Engineering from Washington State University, an MBA from University of Saskatchewan, B.SC in chemistry and Biological sciences from Notre Dame University.

In addition, she has a certificate in Oil and Gas economy from Princeton/Oxford University. She is a member of the Association of professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan and she is one of the 180 certified professional environmental Auditors in the world. Ms. Quarshie has been a Canadian citizen since 1977. She lives in Calgary with her husband, Dr Ellis Quarshie who is the CEO and Executive Director of Stoney Health Services near Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
