Ghanaian boy, 16, stabbed on London bus dies

A Ghanaian schoolboy based in the UK has died after being stabbed on a bus on his way home on his birthday.

Derek Boateng died a day after he was knifed in the chest in Highbury, North London, on Tuesday — his 16th birthday.

According to his family, Derek was on his way back from college to meet a pal before heading home to Hackney.

Sister Linda, 25, said: “He was coming home to his presents, he hadn’t even opened them.”

She said Derek, studying for his GCSEs, “was always laughing and joking”.

Police think he may have had a row over seats or was the victim of a mugging gone wrong. They have not ruled out a gang motive, although Derek’s family say he was not in a gang.

Meanwhile, a boy of 15 has been arrested on suspicion of murder and is in police custody.

Derek Boateng, who had turned 16 on the day he died, was attacked on a route 393 bus just after 15:20 BST on Tuesday at Highbury New Park, Highbury.

He was taken to hospital but died late on Wednesday.

The suspect, from Havering, east London, was charged on Thursday evening and remains in custody at a north London police station.

He is due to appear at Highbury Corner Youth Court on Friday.

He cannot be named for legal reasons.
