Ghanaian Honoured in London

Honorary Doctorate for Nana Kusi Appiah Osraman II

The College of Orthodox Theology (Maximus the Confessor) the Christian Orthodox Church of Hellas, Greece, awarded an honorary doctoral degree (Honoris Causa) Doctor of Letters to Nana Kusi Appiah Osraman II for his humanitarian work in Ghana and the UK.

Dr Nana Kusi Appiah Osraman II had his early education in Ghana where he trained as teacher at the erstwhile Advanced Teacher?s College at Winniba, now the University of Education in Winneba.

At the age of 31, he established a secondary school in Antoa, his hometown. The school is now Government Assisted Secondary School and has produced several academics and other professionals. Dr Nana Kusi Appiah migrated to Great Britain in 1971. On his arrival in the UK, he pursued his academic and professional ambition; he studied Psychiatry for 3 years at the University of London and proceeded to read for MA Educational Planning and Comparative Education for Developing Countries also at the University of London.

He worked for 14 years for the Brent Social Services as a child care officer. He became a Manager for a firm called Newham Mind in East London and co-ordinated their Mental Health Units.

Nana was instrumental in the setting up of the Emergency Unit for Mental Health Acute Assessment at the St. Ann?s Hospital in London. He was the first Manger appointed to run the front line services.

Dr Nana Kusi Appiah left the hospital and established two care homes - Assertive Rehabilitation Centres for those recovering from mental ill health. He owned and managed the Care Homes for 10 years until December 2006.

Nana is a philanthropist and well respected in the Diaspora communities in Britain and Ghana. He is well known for his generosity and has donated handsomely to many organisations, which provide to the needy. He also volunteers much of his time as CHIEF Patron for some twelve community based organisation and charities.

He is a member of Board of Governors for several Charity Organisations in the United Kingdom and Africa.

In 2001, he established a 50 bed General Hospital in Kumasi, the second largest city in Ghana with many facilities including an operation theatre.

He is due to commission a 100-bed hostel by April 2008 under his company called Naka & St. Ama Hostel in Accra for the University of Ghana, Legon.

Professor Felix Kporheme, travelled to London to make the presentation at the recent RECON AWARDS 2007, said, in conferring the honouring degree on Nana Kusi Appiah Osraman 11 that Nana epitomised all the fine qualities of humanity and good Ghanaian.

Dr Nana Kusi Appiah Osraman II has given much of his life responding to the needs of the people of his community in London and in Ghana. He has contributed immensely to the wellbeing of many people all around him and in particular Africa.

He is very modest in his ways and he also champions African personality and culture. Dr Nana Kusi Appiah Osraman II expressed his pleasure for the honour bestowed on him. He was pleased that at last his work has been recognised and pledged that he would do his best to continue to improve the lots of the underprivileged.
