GA Adangmes celebrates Homowo in Toronto

Homowo is celebrated amidst abundance of food and also to promote oneness or unity, peace and love among the Ga-Adangme people, the society and the whole nation at large. In a sense it means “hooting at hunger” to usher in bumper harvest. It is in this vein that Ga-adanmes on Saturday 21st, August 2010 congregated at the Luna Ballroom to celebrate the 2010 Homowo Festival in grand style.

The Ga Mantse,Toronto Nii Kwei Aku V, Naa Akutea Afieye Sika I Ga Manye,Toronto, Naa Korkor Otibo I, Manye Adangbe, traditional elders of Ga and Dangme in GTA sat in state to celebrate the Homowo Festival as well as Nii Ayitey Adjin I Montreal Mantse.

After the opening prayer and singing of the national anthems of Ghana and Canada, the MC for the occasion John Ahoni introduced the honorable guests for the event. Emmanuel Quaye, President of the Ga-Adangbe Association of Toronto gave his welcome speech by enumerating the successes achieved by the association this year. The Ga Mantse and his entourage welcomed the guests by doing the Obonu Traditional Dance led by Nene Omlin Tetteh and then the climax of the event which was the pouring of libation and sprinkling of Kpokpoi by Nii Aku Danso all the way from Wyoming USA supported by some traditional elders. Jessica Glover wowed the crowd with some nice cultural display moves during the interlude so too did Annabel and her sister. A Ghanaian patriotic song ‘Wo dientse wo shikpon ne’ was sung after which the Consul General in Toronto Mawutor Agbanyo read a speech on behalf of H.E. Dr. Turkson, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada who appreciated the fact that the organizers of this year’s event have associated the official representation of Ghana in Canada with this important cultural event. “Homowo is an occasion where our Ga-Adangbe compatriots offer thanksgiving for divine protection, economic and social prosperity, peace and progress”, he continued. The High Commissioner entreated Ghanaians to let the occasion and its good tidings influence each and everyone to seek for resolutions for all conflicts within the Ghanaian community here and by extension to our compatriots in Ghana. He concluded by asking Ghanaians in their prayers to remember to implore divine blessings, favours and protection for Ghana, the Ghanaian community in Canada and everyone. Dinner time was when authentic Ghanaian dishes were served to signify the abundant essence of the Homowo celebration. Another climax of the night was the Kpaashimo (circle dance) which drew almost half of the crowd to do their feet to join in the excitement. Blessing and vote of thanks were given by Nii Kwei Aku V, Naa Akuyea Sika I, Naa Korkor Otibo I. Music was provided by DJ Emma and the Sound Crew
