Africa comes to Spitalfields Market, London

At the end of this month Spitalfields, one of London's biggest and oldest markets, will be transformed into an Afrocentric shopping and eating experience.

On 27 May, Spitalfields will be "celebrating the vibrant African culture and showcasing the talents from Africa and the diaspora in the UK. The day is to include an array of stalls of African music, film, fashion, interiors, street food, art, crafts and literature", according to the Spitalfields website.

The event will showcase new and established African designers and visitors will have a chance to sample authentic African cuisine as well as watch cultural performances.

Spitalfields takes its name from the hospital and priory, St. Mary's Spittel that was founded in 1197. Lying in the heart of the East End of London, it is an area known for its spirit and strong sense of community. It was in a field next to the priory where the now famous market first started in the thirteenth century.
