AG Meets Ghanaian Lawyers In The US

The Association of Ghanaian Lawyers of America (AGLA) will host the Honorable Betty Mould-Iddrisu, Ghana’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, at a private dinner in New York City. Issues to be discussed with the Attorney General include the state of the law in Ghana, efforts at constitutional reform and the advancement of the rule of law. In addition, AGLA and the Attorney General will explore how the legal expertise of Ghanaian attorneys practicing law in the United States may be tapped for the benefit of Ghana as well as providing legal assistance to the indigent.

“We expect that relations between us on this side and the legal community in Ghana will see a boost from the Attorney General’s visit,” said Prof. Victor Essien, a law professor at Fordham Law School and board member of AGLA. AGLA president, Kwaku Boafoh Agyeman, expressed interest in starting a new chapter of collaboration between AGLA and Ghana. “I look forward to putting into focus our members’ interest in helping to address some of the legal issues in our country. The challenges inherent in strengthening our democracy and the rule of law require that all people of Ghanaian descent join the national dialogue. Hopefully, this visit provides a window of opportunity for AGLA to get involved.”

While in New York, the Attorney General will discuss the investment climate in Ghana and the rule of law at New York University; meet with the Under-Secretary-General for Legal Affairs/The Legal Counsel and the Director of the UNDP Democratic Governance Group, both of the United Nations; and hold discussions with the Clinical Faculty of Fordham University School of Law. She will also visit Washington, D.C. where she will meet U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder, visit with the U.S. Congress and address the American Society of International Law.

The Association of Ghanaian Lawyers of America (AGLA) is a not-for profit organization established in the US to provide a forum for Ghanaian lawyers in the United States to address matters relevant to their profession and to advocate and support the advancement of Ghana and its people while serving as a dominant link between Ghana and the United States.
