The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) Sanitation Court has fined a coconut seller, Prince Nyame, GH¢360 for indiscriminately dumping coconut husks into a public drain near Accra Academy at Bubuashie.

According to adomonline.com, Nyame was convicted on Tuesday, July 25, 2026, after pleading guilty to breaching the AMA’s 2017 Sanitation By-laws. The court imposed a fine of 30 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢360, or a three-month prison term in default.

He was arrested by AMA officials, with the support of security personnel, after being caught disposing of a large quantity of husks into a drain along the school’s wall.

According to AMA Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah, Nyame initially pleaded not guilty and was granted bail, but later changed his plea to guilty, prompting the court to impose the minimum sentence.

Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, condemned the act, describing the dumping of coconut husks and other solid waste into drains as a major contributor to blocked drainage systems, flooding, and poor sanitation in the city.

He stressed that coconut sellers generate significant amounts of waste daily and must ensure proper disposal through approved waste management providers.

Allotey cautioned traders against using drains, pavements, and other public spaces as dumping grounds, warning that such practices constitute offences under the Assembly’s sanitation regulations. He added that the AMA would intensify monitoring and enforcement across the metropolis to prosecute offenders.

He urged coconut sellers and food vendors to provide waste containers at their trading points and arrange for the regular evacuation of refuse.

He also appealed to residents to report incidents of indiscriminate dumping to support efforts to maintain a clean and healthy Accra.
