A new and disturbing strategy allegedly being used by car hijackers has been exposed after broadcaster, David Akuetteh, recounted how suspected robbers reportedly used a motorbike distraction and fake roadside activity to hijack a vehicle on the Asante Mampong stretch.

Speaking in a viral TikTok video and sighted by GhanaWeb on May 19, 2026, Akuetteh narrated that the incident occurred around 10 pm when a driver travelling in a Honda vehicle slowed down while trying to navigate potholes on the stretch.

“On the Asante Mampong stretch around 10pm, the driver got to a pothole and slowed down. After coming out of the pothole a guy on a motorbike blocks him from the front; so, the driver with the Honda vehicle had to stop,” he said.

According to him, the driver rolled down his window to ask the motor rider to move, but the rider allegedly became confrontational and accused him of trying to knock him down.

“He rolled his side of the glass down to tell the motor rider to move, the motor rider started insulting him and saying, ‘Do you want to kill me?’” Akuetteh recounted.

He alleged that while the argument continued, three men among four individuals stationed nearby approached the driver’s side of the vehicle and flashed pistols hidden beneath their shirts.

“Three guys among the four came close to him at the driver side, raised their shirts and showed him pistol,” he stated.

Akuetteh added that another suspect reportedly positioned himself on the other side of the vehicle with a jack and spanner, pretending to fix a tyre to avoid attracting suspicion.

“At the other side of the car was one among the four with a jack and spanner pretending to be working on the tyre so when one is passing no one would suspect it’s a robbery,” he said.

The suspects allegedly later forced the driver out of the vehicle and made him sit by the roadside before driving away in the car once the motorbike rider moved.

However, the victim reportedly sought help from another rider and later returned to the scene to trace the vehicle.

According to Akuetteh, the thieves were eventually abandoned the car after it became jammed and locked with the help of a GPS he had fixed in the car.

“The thieves couldn’t come out because it was jammed and locked, so they had to break the top of the car glass in order to escape,” he said.

He cautioned motorists to remain alert, warning that the incident points to what could be a new tactic being employed by robbers to target drivers, especially at night.
