After marriage husbands and wives often need to detach themselves emotionally from their parents to some extent if their marriage is to survive and thrive. You don't want a mother in law popping in unannounced and telling you how you should cook for Kwame or how you should look after your children. Unwise and immature spouses often take the side of their own parent or parents against their spouse.
We all know cases of men and women who married to please their parents rather than marry on the basis of mutual affection, shared interests, shared faith and values, and good character traits all of which promote a healthy marriage. These unfortunate men and women watched their marriages disintegrate as incompatibilities quickly emerged and respect and affection evaporated.
