Two persons in court for assaulting Policemen

Tema, Aug 4, GNA - Two persons who resisted arrest and assaulted two policemen have been put before the Tema Circuit Court 'A'. The two pleaded not guilty to charges of threat of harm, resisting arrest, use of offensive weapons and assault of public officer and the court granted them bail in the sum of 60 million cedis with a surety each to be justified.

The accused persons Yaw Azedi, 25, and George Awan, 26, would re-appear on August 23.

Prosecuting, Police Inspector Sarah Acquah told the court that the accused persons assaulted a customs officer who owns Shed Nine Drinking Bar at Community One and Police Constable Donkor stationed at the Community One Police Station.

Inspector Acquah said on July 29, there was a Guinness Promotion programme at the drinking bar so the accused persons went there and bought 69,000 cedis worth of drinks but paid only 50,000 cedis. She said when the bar owner demanded the rest of the money they became offended and threatened to kill him.

According to the prosecution, when information reached the Police, personnel from Communities One and Two were detailed to arrest them but the accused persons beat them up and stabbed one of them. The policemen went back to the station and brought reinforcement but the accused persons, wielding knives, chased them to the charge office and threatened to stab policeman who approached them. Inspector Acquah said the accused persons bolted away in a taxi but the police chased them and arrested them.
