Footballer grabbed with 20 slabs of weed

The Eastern Regional Police in Koforidua have arrested a 31-year old footballer Famous Monyuie with 20 slabs of compressed processed dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp at the Atimpoku section of the Adomi Bridge.

Famous, who claimed he recently retired from playing football, now plied his trade as a driver plying the route of Gemeni in the Volta Region to Kpong in the Eastern Region.

He was arrested on Wednesday at about 5:45pm while transporting passengers in his Hyundai mini bus registered GW 7158-11 from Gemeni en route to Kpong by police officers who were patrolling.

A spot check on the bus revealed 11 of the slabs of compressed weed concealed in a paper carton.

Monyuie who was in charge of the vehicle, quickly accepted ownership, saying he was assigned by a certain man whose name he only gave as Etse, to be delivered to an unknown recipient at Kpong.

Initially, the vehicle and the suspect were sent to Akosombo Police Station for further search and interrogation.

The police soon discovered nine more slabs concealed in a compartment at the rare of the vehicle making the number 20.

During interrogation, Monyuie disclosed that the said Etse kept the exhibits at New Kayira near To-Kpalime in the South-Dayi District of the Volta Region and called him on the phone to pick them in a bush where he allegedly kept them.

Etse according to Monyuie added a telephone number that when he called, the exhibits would be delivered to the recipient in Kpong.

He alleged that he charged GH¢6 per slab.

However, luck eluded him as he could not reach his destination before he was arrested.

He is currently in the custody of the Koforidua Police assisting in the investigation.

ACP James Azuma Abass Abaah, Deputy Regional Commander who confirmed the story to DAILY GUIDE said the police would not countenance drug peddlers who were gradually becoming nuisance in the region.

He advised people with like minds as Monyuie to abandoned such illegal trade or risk being arrested and prosecuted.
