Former President John Dramani Mahama has urged government to open the newly built Kejetia Market for business. According to him, the first phase of the new market complex, built by his NDC administration, should be open for the market women to start using it.

Speaking to delegates of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Subin constituency as part of his four-day campaign tour of the Ashanti Region, Mr. Mahama also asked why the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government is delaying work on the start of the second phase of the Kejetia Market.

There have been complaints from many people in Kumasi about the handling of the project by the current government. President Mahama noted that the NDC government saw the need to develop the market because Kumasi has one of the biggest markets in the West African sub-region, adding that his administration secured funding for the second phase of the project as well.

“I thought by now, the market would be open for business, whereby traders at the phase two site would have been moved to the new place for the second phase to start but nothing is happening as at now,” he noted.

Mr. Mahama said Kumasi is very strategic when it comes to business and it is imperative that the Akufo-Addo government, as a matter of urgency, fixes the market quickly to enable traders conduct their business.

He said Ghanaians are facing untold economic hardship under the NPP government and it is important that members of the NDC unite and work hard to kick them out of government in the 2020 elections.
