Ghana and Colombia have signed a landmark agreement to establish a direct maritime trade route linking the Port of Tema to the Port of Cartagena in a remarkable development set to re-define trade between Africa and Latin America.

This significant deal, finalised in Bogotá, is expected to open up new avenues for trade and foster economic growth for both nations.

The announcement was celebrated by Ghanaian officials, including a statement shared on the official X page of Minister of Foreign Affairs Sam Okudzeto Ablakwa on March 23, 2026, which declared, "Long live our fantastic Ghana-Colombia relations."



This ambitious initiative is seen as a transformative step in reshaping the Atlantic Ocean corridor, historically associated with the transatlantic slave trade, into a pathway of opportunity and empowerment.

The agreement was championed by Colombia’s first Vice President of African descent, Francia Elena Márquez Mina, whose dedication to fostering stronger ties with Ghana was widely praised.

"It is most inspiring to see how the Atlantic Ocean corridor linking our two countries, which previously represented the horror of slavery, is now being deliberately transformed into a voyage of opportunity, job creation, and economic empowerment," she emphasised.



Additionally, the Ghanaian delegation expressed its gratitude to Colombian Foreign Minister Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio for her leadership in facilitating this historic accord.

As the two countries embark on this new chapter of collaboration, the effects of this trade route are expected to be far-reaching, with significant implications for job creation and economic development in both regions.
