Ghana must aim at wining trophies â?? Dede

Olympic Marseille winger Andre Ayew has urged Ghana to move beyond finishing tournaments as one of the most consistent sides to grabbing the ultimate on the continent.

The four-time African champions have often been touted as favourites to win continental showpiece, but have flattered to deceive in many occasions.

The West African powerhouse was silver-medalists in the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and went on to surprise many when they got to the quarter-finals of the first World Cup hosted in Africa in 2010.

The Black Stars could only manage a fourth-placed finish at both the 2012 and 2013 Nations Cups despite being regarded as one of the huge contenders for the title.

Although young Ayew, who has been one of the key players for the Black Stars, missed out on Ghana’s last Afcon, the midfielder believes the team can only win titles if issues regarding the team are addressed.

“It’s true, a lot of people say that, but when things go well we ought to be winning trophies,” Ayew told Fifa.com. “However, we’ve not won anything for years, apart from the Under-20 World Cup 2009 and the same year’s African U-20 Championship.”

“True, we’re always among the semi-finalists or finalists [in continental competitions]. It’s nice enough, we play well, we go far but, at the end of the day, we don’t win anything. That’s not enough for me,” he said.

“We may be among Africa’s most consistent sides, but if we don’t manage to win titles then something’s not right. If we can focus a bit more on that issue, we could achieve great things,” Ayew noted.
