The Axim Sports Complex in the Western Region is facing a worrying deterioration, with parts of the facility appearing to have been left at the mercy of weeds and the elements.

A video circulating on social media shows weeds growing extensively around the complex, including over sections of the tartan tracks and along the perimeter fence.

The spectator seats also appear badly weathered, with visible signs of rot and vegetation taking over parts of the stands.

A man seen inside the facility in the video claimed the complex has remained largely closed for a long period and is only opened when football-related activities are scheduled, raising concerns about its regular maintenance and utilisation.

The situation is particularly concerning given the investment that has gone into the facility.

Construction of the Axim sports project commenced in April 2016 with plans for a 5,000-capacity stadium featuring a FIFA-standard football pitch, an eight-lane athletics track and facilities for basketball, volleyball and tennis.

By March 2023, the newly constructed eight-lane tartan track had been declared ready for use.

Yet, years after the project was conceived, images of the complex in its current state have raised fresh questions about the maintenance culture in Ghana.
