Five players who could rescue Ghana’s 2018 World Cup hopes

Ghana’s chances of qualifying for the 2018 World Cup was threatened last week following the Black Stars’ 2-0 defeat to Egypt in Alexandria. The result has left the Black Stars six points behind the Pharaohs of Egypt who are currently leading the group having won their two games. Many have questioned the calibre of players currently being used the qualifiers. Goal.com has consequently named five Ghanaian internationals who could help put the country’s quest for a fourth straight World Cup appearance on track.

Kevin Prince-Boateng

The 29-year-old Las Palmas attacker is probably one of the most in form Ghanaian pros right now and has perhaps proven why should he should be reconsidered for Black Stars selection. Capped 15 times already by Ghana and featured at both 2010 and 2014 WCs prior to a fallout with then coach Kwesi Appiah. Boateng definitely has the mettle that Avram Grant will require from his players heading to the must-win final four matches of their qualifying campaign.

Asamoah Gyan

Perhaps he is what Ghana missed in the defeat to Egypt in Alexandria on Sunday. Asamoah Gyan is the country’s most capped player and all time leading goalscorer with 48 goals in 98 matches. Their struggle to convert possession into goals against the Pharaohs indeed signified Gyan’s need and experience.

Sulley Muntari

Sulley Muntari was one of Egypt’s chief destroyers in the famous 6-1 defeat by the Black Stars en route 2014 World Cup. His presence in midfield and experience are some of the things that Ghana have missed in their campaign so far. He boasts experience from the past three World Cups, in 2006, 2010 and in 2014.

Kwadwo Asamoah

The Juventus utility player possesses all the necessary attributes to help save Avram Grant’s shambles. He is a seasoned international campaigner, experienced and versatile.

Michael Essien

Although unattached currently, Michael Essien would bring in wealth of experience and stability to the team. It is perhaps time he is recalled in order to help rescue the Black Stars. The plus is that, in the absence of club engagements, Essien would fully commit to Ghana at both the 2017 Afcon and the World Cup Qualifiers
