Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah took to social media to mark Ghana's maiden appearance at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany on June 12 with an emotional message on social media.

The former Juventus star who goes into the history books as the first player to captain the Black Stars at the World Cup share a post to mark the day.

"Exactly 14 years ago...a nations dream was fulfilled...Exactly 14 today the dream of 23 gallant footballers to represent their nation at the world cup was realized..Exactly 14 years today...I can still hear the loud cheers from our teaming supporters in Germany....Exactly 14 years today we kicked the ball to open our World cup campaign....Thanks to my colleagues, supporters and thanks to all who made it possible.. *LASTING MEMORIES", the post from Appiah read.

Appiah scored a decisive goal in the last group game against the USA which propelled the Black Stars into the Round of 16 stages.

Ghana was eliminated from the competition by Brazil in the Round of 16.

The Black Stars received a heroes welcome when they arrived back home in Accra.
