A joint police-cum-military team is roaming the North Campus of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) apparently to foil a planned demonstration, 3news.com gathers.

The officers were seen on Thursday morning.

Most of them are in plain clothes, our Central Region correspondent Lucy Ayambilla reported, but no one can take pictures of them.

“I also saw two police officers from the Agona Swedru Police Command,” she said.

The officers are said to have been called in by the Vice-Chancellor, Reverend Father Professor Anthony Afful-Broni, following rumours of the townsfolk planning a demonstration on Thursday.

The demonstration is said to be against the Governing Council of UEW, whose tenure is said to have expired.

The situation on campus has left many students in fear especially for those who are looking forward to the scheduled graduation ceremony on Monday, our correspondent reported.

The University was shut down on Thursday, March 14 following a violent demonstration by students over some sacked lecturers.

But it was reopened on Monday, April 8.

The academic calendar was, consequently, reviewed to cater for three-week loss of work.
