Ghana can be the cleanest country - Broadway Entertainment

Accra Accra

Mr Abdul Fatawu Alhassan, the Chief Executive officer (CEO) of Broadway Entertainment on Thursday urged Ghanaians to abstain from indiscriminate disposal of waste to help make Ghana one of cleanest in Africa.

Mr Alhassan said this during a working visit to Nima, a suburb of Accra where the Broadway Entertainment Sanitation programme was launched.

He called on the residents to stop littering and throwing refuse into gutters, avoid filth, and stagnant waters which breed mosquitoes.

“President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo wants to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa and we are in support of this and we want to spread the message.

“In support of the President, Ghanaians have to strive to support initiatives aimed at cleanliness. We need a concerted effort to keep our cities clean.

“We are all involved to achieve this. Christianity talks about cleanliness so Ghana should be clean but our attitude is the problem…we must all change our attitude towards waste disposal,” he said.

He said; “Broadway Entertainment picked Nima and its surrounding areas as a test case and our aim is to tell the people in this community that enough is enough and that they should say no to garbage and live in a clean and healthy environment”.

He said Broadway Entertainment and its partners including Zoomlion would come together to ensure that Accra and Ghana become the cleanest city in the country. “We seek to bring together various organisations including local councils, chief executive officers, religious and traditional leaders and all other stakeholders who are supposed to provide services for cleaning the areas”. Mr Ras Kobby, the Director of Broadway Entertainment called for funding and provision of waste bins at designated places. He said “as we embarked on the fight against indiscriminate dumping of waste, we must provide convenient places for proper disposal. We must also teach people proper ways of handling different types of waste”. Mr Kobby said musicians will embarked on advocacy to create awareness as well as raise funds through music and entertainment to support the campaign against indiscriminate waste disposal.

A resident of Nima, Mr Mustapha Larry narrating the state of waste disposal within the community expressed disappointment and said “We only have one dustbin in this whole area and that causes the dumping of refuse in the gutters.

“Another problem is that some of the residents have joined their toilets sewage into gutters and it is not helping. The people in Nima wants neatness but our gutters are filled with garbage and human excreter. Sanitation is not about politics so we should devoid it of politics and make our environment clean”, he said.

He called on the government to implement a policy that can allow offenders to be arrested and prosecuted.
