The Metro Mass Transit Limited says the cache of arms and ammunition found by the Police on one of its buses which was heading to the Kpassah District of the Volta Region did not go through their luggage loading system.

According to the company, its preliminary investigations that revealed that the illegal arms and ammunitions were smuggled into the bus with the registration GR 4417-12 which was travelling from Accra.

“We want to place on record that our internal preliminary investigation has revealed that the illegal items carried on the bus did not pass through our luggage loading system and that they were loaded onto the bus at the blind side of our officers at the loading terminal,” it said.

A statement issued signed by the Corporate Communications Manager of MMT, George Krobea Asante said the company have operational guidelines which requires all luggage to go through their loading system at their various terminals

However, the company said the conduct of the driver who was not named, “contravened” the company’s operational regulations.

The company said now that the issue is now a subject matter of a court case, it will not make any “prejudicial comments”

Notwithstanding, “we have discovered that the driver unlawfully took the parcel on his way to the loading terminal at Opera Square and hid it from the parcel attendant at the terminal. This was clearly against the company’s parcel policy,” it said.

Police at the Nkwanta barrier on Sunday intercepted the bus at about 5:00pm with submachine gun and three containers of about 2,100 cartridges. The illegal weapons were discovered during a random check on the bus.
