One dead, 30 injured after church building collapsed on worshipers at Swedru

One person has been confirmed dead at Agona Swedru in the Central Region while 30 people are being hospitalized at Swedru Government Hospital when the Spoken Ministry International Church and two other church buildings collapsed on them during a service yesterday.

The incident occurred during a heavy downpour yesterday at about 10 am.

Some of the victims in the pastors of the church suffered varying degrees of injury with others having their legs fractured.

According to Oman FM’s central regional correspondent Joojo Blankson, who visited the Swedru government hospital, some of the victims have been transferred to Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, 600 people are also said to have been displaced in Swedru and surrounding villages.

The heavy downpour also affected the Agona Swedru Circuit Court.

The court had its roof ripped off.

The Agona West Municipal Disaster Control Officer Mr Joseph Kojo Appiah told Oman FM that the heavy downpour wretched havoc to several properties and displaced hundreds of people in the process.

He explained that they are still assessing the extent of damage and would make their report available when they are done.
