If you think that translation and interpreting are unproductive, how else would there be communication, common understanding and relationship-building between different people of different nationalities speaking different languages?
How would world trade and travel be fostered? How, for instance, can a British company open a subsidiary in China or Japan without employing staff who can speak the local language?
The suggestion is to be literate in our local languages and encourage their use. We can still learn English as a foreign language to facilitate external communication.

The Germans, Russians, Chinese, Japanese, French and others did not have to learn English to become technologically advanced.
English and French are the two principal international languages. But that does not mean we should still keep it as our national language. We can learn it as a foreign language, but let us learn to be literate in our indigenous languages first.

A scientific research conducted in the lab either in Germany, Japan, China, France or Korea should be grounded first on the understanding of the underlying scientific principles which are universal and irrespective of language. The substance of the key findings or inventions are based on the science and not on the language. The article could then be translated into a language depending on the journal requirements and specification. The fact that most journals are not written in these languages does not affect the substance of their inventions or significant contribution of the knowledge they share. Write a very nice article in English without key interesting findings and see whether it would be accepted in a top journal. I maintain that what is more catastrophic to our educational system is the content and the richness of the training and not necessarily on our inability to rattle the English language

Up to a senior high school level (A-level), it compulsory for students to get at least 50% in English and A home language to progress.

I work with people of all sort of backgrounds from different countries, not just ordinary people but professionals and in some cases they can't speak English well but these are people who are making things happen. It is rather pathetic for an intellectual to impose English language on us whilst the local languages are defunct which is definitely leading us astray. Look at the developed countries, who speaks the English language apart from the British and Americans who consider the language as a congenital and can't avoided. As very versed as you think, there was the need to bring us back to the history instead of imposing the queen's language on us.

The Germans, Chinese, Russians and blab lala u were referring to; are u aware whatever is developed and invented there is written in the English language?
Are u also aware China is doing so hard to teach it's citizens English ? Because they have realized it is affecting their international competitiveness. Germans are also learning English in their schools. English is the global official language, in case you don't know.
I belived this is coming from half educated people, 'untraveled' local champions and very myopic people in this country.

Check the various online news portals and the print media and you will also see several instances of poor English language usage.
For those comparing Ghana to nations like China and the rest, what you are refusing to understand is that we as a country have decided to make English as our main mode of instruction in schools. And so for me, if you want to do it, then do it well.
