Why are some ignorant fools insulting this Prof? She said nothing new and, as a historian, just repeating the facts. Even Prof. Adu Boahen wrote about how the missionaries were nursing seedlings at Aburi and trying to get the locals to adopt cocoa farming without much success. That was happening long before Tetteh Quarshie brought some smuggled seeds from Fernado Po, where plantations already existed.

Some educated African Americans don't like Africans because they know our ancestors sold their forefathers into slavery. Find out from Asantehene, Denkyirahene, Akwamuhene as to who sold some of their conquered people into slavery.

Ethiopia had used the flag with the tricolours : red gold green way back in the form of triangular shapes but in 1897 they changed the colours into rectangular shapes with the same interpretation as by Theodosia Oko word for word [verbatimly]. The black star was first designed by Marcus Garvey, a shipping merchant in the USA in 1922 as an emblem for his company:BLACK STAR SHIPPING LINES. The BOLIVIAN had used the red gold green flag since 1825 with the same interpretation of the colours as purported to by Theodosia Oko when her parents were not born. Tetteh Quarshie is not the first person to be disproved by research, even in the sciences lot have been disproved.

Hence someone can go to the extremes of calling an accomplished researcher a "bitch", without bothering to ascertain the basis of her thesis. If she asserts that cocoa was originally introduced in the Gold Coast by Dutch Missionaries, why should that be interpreted as worshiping the white man? How would we describe a person who asserts that academic education was brought to the Gold Coast by the missionaries; a worshipper of the white man? In academia, if one disagrees with the findings of another person's research, one conducts one's own research, to refute the former. But our people respond to a person they disagree with by, calling him/her names. One would be surprised to discover that, those insulting this accomplished academic, do not possess even a basic first university degree.

Trust me our Academia is on the take through research grants to pursue the colonialist perfidy against the struggle of our nation for dignity and economic freedom. I have seen them in Agric research in support of GMO,in economics in support of structural adjustment and the Washington Consensus and the now sustainable development goals that they promote as poverty reduction strategy when in fact it is putting us on the "dole" or welfare colonialism I also see it in political science where the study of decolonization that is narrative of our development history is ignored.Our professors in this mode are irrelevant because education without purpose is meaningless. You may be right too because my mother also used to tell us the same thing especially after we had prepared our baskets and palm kernel for school. However I know the name as Mohr, but not Mole, and I know the orchard which was often referred to as Mohr turo, to wit, Mohr's garden or orchard. Remnants of this ancient orchard can still be seen at Akropong close to, or almost opposite the main gate of the Presbyterian Training College. A portrait picture of then Rev. Mohr can also be seen in the PTC college library. Thank you Madam.

It's not right to insult her and I condemn it but we will not accept this so-called correction of history. For once, let's behave like other races do, thus to defend their own even if it's undue. No white will correct history to credit the black man at the expense of his own. Excuse me Prof Perbi, when we're you born and why do you think it is your mother who can write Ghana's history because she tells you to do something nicely like Rev Haas. You did not tell us Rev Haas actually brought cocoa.
If the Basel mission wanted to bring cocoa or brought cocoa as you are saying they are such a big institution that Tetteh Quarshie was not going to stamp his name on the bringing of cocoa to Ghana.
As a researcher you can probe any thing you want but you conclusion should be consistent and valid with citations and proof.
Someone can also say the Bremen Mission brought cocoa to Ghana and what can you say about that?
Now the fact that Tetteh Quarshie worked for the said missionary means nothing. What was his job description. He was almost used as a slave or prisoner with no rights, under hard labour on farm in Fernando Po.
So how come his name shoots to the top as the one who brought cocoa?
Here is where it sounds interesting.
Even if the Basel Mission first cocoa to Ghana which might have been true and tried to grow them.
Did their Brazil cocoa survive? No. So you may be right but who made the first ever living, thriving, successful, cocoa to Ghana.
Voila! There you go it is the only and only one Tetteh Quarshie.
You know when a glass is half full another person will say it us half empty, this is where it gets tricky you need a test to see who is right
AND in this case test is put a live fish head in the half full area of the glass and put another fish with its tail in the half full area as see which fish will live or survive. The fish with the tall in the half full area will die and the fish with the head in the half full will survive. Meaning the half empty person is less conclusive than the half full person.
Hence, since Tetteh Quarshie's cocoa survived he is the hero of Ghana cocoa not any Basel Mission and the mission know that in their heart and faith.
Conclusion
Prof Perbi I am sorry you cannot correct history or rewrite history based on your mother telling you to clean stuff or be clean.

BACKGROUND
Many Ghanaians when asked who first introduced cocoa to Ghana would not hesitate in answering that it is Tetteh Quarshie a Ga who hails from Osu in Accra. Tetteh Quarshie travelled to the Fernando Po Island where he worked as a blacksmith. Upon returning to Ghana in 1879, he brought with him cocoa pods known as “AMELONADE” and planted them on his farm at Mampong (Akwapim).
Although Tetteh Quarshie is credited with the introduction of cocoa into the then Gold Coast, records have it that the Dutch missionaries planted cocoa in the coastal belt of Ghana as far back as 1815. The Basel missionaries also planted cocoa in Aburi – Eastern Region in 1857. The people of Gold Coast embraced cocoa farming wholeheartedly and within a few years, its production had spread from the Eastern Region to Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, Central and the Western Region.
The first export of cocoa from the Gold Coast took place in 1885 and by 1908, Ghana export had reached 20,000 metric tons. Ghana attained the Number One status in the production of cocoa in 1911 with 41,000 tons. In the 1920s, production increased to between 165,000 and 213,000 tons. Ghana’s contribution to the world’s total output then was 40%. Between 1976 and 1977, cocoa started experiencing a fall in its production.
Production began to decline between 1976 and 1977 due to the outbreak of pests and diseases like the capsid and swollen shoot viral disease and falling prices until it reached a 63 year low of 158,000mt in 1983/84.
MARKETING
From the early years until the late 1930’s the local merchants were the ones controlling the cocoa trade in the Gold Coast. Companies like the U.A.C., Paterson and Zochonis (PZ), G.B. Olivant, UTC, Cadbury and Fry as well as J. Lyons were importing foods into the Gold Coast and purchasing farm products such as coffee, cocoa, kennels, rubber and palm oil for export overseas.
All, however, was not smooth sailing. Difficulties arose as a result of Cadbury and Fry emphasizing on quality to lower prices and also supporting expansion of farms in various ways. This action did not go down well with other local merchant companies as they assumed Cadbury and Fry were monopolizing the industry. In 1937, farmers went on strike and refused to sell their cocoa on the grounds of low price for their produce.
The outcome of these developments resulted in the establishment of the Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) in 1947 to provide marketing services to farmers. The Produce Buying Agency was given monopoly over the internal marketing of cocoa in the country in 1977. The sector was however liberalized in 1992 as a result of a World Bank policy. This led to the licensing of many companies (LBCs) including Kuapa Kokoo to do the internal marketing of cocoa.
The Cocoa Marketing Company performs the external marketing of cocoa.
PRICING
Ghana’s cocoa pricing has witnessed some changes over the years. Beginning from 1947 when the Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) was established, together with Cocoa Marketing Company (CMB) to advise the Government as to what price to pay to the farmers every year, taking into consideration the world price and local factors.
At the moment pricing of cocoa is done by a committee known as Producer Price Review Committee (PPRC) which meets quarterly to review the cocoa prices payable to our farmers. This committee comprises of Government, Cocobod, LBCs and farmers representatives.

We need to respect facts and the truth irrespective of how hard they might be to take as a nation or a people. The truth of the matter is Haas first brought cocoa to Ghana but our beloved Agyiri commercialised the production of cocoa. It is the same with the computer. Although Bill Gates name is synonymous with the computer, it was Charles Cabbage who first invented the computer in 1833. Some historians may even argue that the idea of what is now called a computer started much earlier.
What is important is to recognise and appreciate everyone's role in bringing cocoa to Ghana.As Aristotle once aptly put it "if I have seen furthest than others, it is because I am seating on the shoulders of giants". It is the same with the wright brothers and the aeroplane. Do you think they will recognise an aeroplane today if they were to be raised from the dead? IdeS start small and they get bigger and better by others adding to it.
The brouhaha about what this lady has said is symptomatic of our general psyche as a nation. He don't appreciate value additions. In other words, we don't think that adding value to an original idea is a good thing worthy of celebration. That is why we only export raw materials without adding value to them by way of processing them. That is why a country with so much gold, we have no single recognised jeweller.
If we fail to recognise that Dr Agyiri's role is not diminished in the history of cocoa production in Ghana simply because someone else brought the cocoa to Ghana first despite the fact that he is recognised as the one responsible for its spread and commercial production, then how on earth will we encourage our young to embark on innovations using existing resources in Ghana?

The writers hide the truth about the first people to bring coca to Ghana where it was planted. Now I know that cultivating of coca in large Scale started with Tetteh Quarshie when he return from Fernando poo. Those who write should not distort fact they write as it is. There are many times I have corrected books sellers at lorry stations and in busses about festival of Fantes especially Gomua Many writers are telling our children that AKWANBO is festival of Gomua people which is wrong. The festival for Gomua is AHORBA Festival which is celebrated in May and August. AKWANBO is just one element in the festival. It is not their fault because many of the Gomua towns when they are making announcements for their they do not use AHORBA AFAHY3 for the announcement. There books which tell us how AHORBA festival came about but today Ghana these books are no more in our classrooms so will the children know?

History has to told as it really happened. This world is full of distorted tales of history which upon scholarly scrutiny falls apart. It had nothing to do with national pride or prestige. As an example, now there are European and American historians who are at work trying hard to erase Black Africa from the pages of history to prove that nothing good can come from what they disparaging call "the dark continent" not because we have darker skins but to they Africa is dark, it's children are dark at heart and backward, live like animals. Now they are even trying to rewrite human history. They now are postulating that humans did not first come from Africa but multiple places. How can they de-humanize Africa and Africans if their ancestors come from Africa, hence the multi origin theory which is gaining momentum. The Professor is just saying that cocoa had early trial by some others but their layouts fizzled until the arrival of the seeds Tetteh Quarshie brought into the country and found fertile soil in which it thrived. He, Tetteh Quarshie still remains the father of Ghana's cocoa industry. The fact remains the professor was right, others came before him and failed. The people posting all these negative comments please chill, the professor isn't taking anything from the legacy of Mr Quarshie. Please be informed because a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

The problem with our societies today is that we don't take time to listen. If anything we hear doesn't seem to fit in with our preconceived ideas, we quickly jump to conclusions and flip out.

The fact that Tetteh Quarshie wasn't the first to bring the pods to Ghana doesn't make him less great a man! That was not the point Prof. Perbi was making! Education is failing us. Please have some decency when addressing people trying to set the records straight. It's the least you can do.

I do not think insulting such a learned historian and a mother is the best way to go this. She argued from an academic point of view. Hence, any disagreement should follow suit and not an insult.
