What is required to become certified as a teacher in Ontario?
Teachers in Ontario are certified to teach either general studies or technological studies. General studies include what you might think of as "traditional" school subjects, such as language, art, math, physical education, computers, science and music. Technological studies include more work-related areas such as manufacturing, construction and hospitality services.
If you wish to teach general studies to students of any age level in a publicly funded Ontario school, you must hold:
A degree from an acceptable post-secondary institution (a Bachelor of Arts, for example); AND
A minimum one-year program of teacher education (a Bachelor of Education, for example). Visit the College website here for more information about acceptable programs of teacher education.
A four-year university degree that combines academic and teacher education courses will also be considered.

If by extending the nurses trainee years by 12 months more and giving the a degree is what makes education better then I wonder what kind of leaders we have. Why can't we think far? if you want quality eduction you do not promise everything free free free. You need to pump more money into improving the quality of schools by proving all the modern labs and good systems in place so the nurses can have access to good schools. They can take loans to access their eduction 3 yeas is more than enough to equip a nurse. They can stay in school for even 10 years so long there are no quality schools they will end up holding degrees for nothing.

An additinal year training would enhance not only the quality of teaching but also give teachers the confidence they need to be innovative and creative. Currently children are taught but lacks that critical thinking skills which is taken for granted in the developed world. Ghanaian children are so timid and do not challenge thier teachers at all. If they do because of being curious they are told to be stubborn and discipline by canning them. Unless Ghana also adopt their own child protection policy to protect our children they will be abused by teachers and others . This is because all children are vulnerable and they rely on adult however many are disappointed by us but powerless to speak out to defend themselves.

Government should think of reintroducing it, adding ICT. Alternatively, only degree graduates specialising in these subject areas should be allowed to teach in the new 4 year program.

Think of how to improve quality in teaching field, school are without computer.smart board to facilitate teaching and learning.
Why other parts of human race from this planet called earth are using lesser years to be in school but we in Ghana on the same plannet stay longer years in school with a simple reason that the longer it takes the quality and better student we produced!!.

The issue is quite clear to all involved, educators, parents and a sensible government. Perhaps, the NPP intends to use same duration of the school cycle but with a little bit of novelty, to achieve better results, by the introduction of improved quality teaching and delivery. The teacher will be the plank of the desired results hence, their continuous training development.

It could be a good idea for basic school teachers to have first degree as practiced in developed world. But do we have the resources and the infrastructure to do it now. It is not about extending the duration of studies, but having qualified lecturers to at least to a masters' degree level and the resources to meet the requirements of a university standards. Anything apart from this will lead to producing low standard graduates which is already the case in our established universities in the country.

Yet another band aid to patch a gaping wound. The problem of poor education in Ghana is not because the teacher trainees are not degree holders. It is because the teachers are simply not teaching. Besides are you going to grant a university accreditation to these training colleges before granting them bachelors degrees? Look, you can dress these trainees any way you want and the problem will still be there. We force all elementary and JSS kids to wear the same uniform; we shuttle between 3 and 4 years of JSS; and now we are offering degrees to trainees teachers thinking that will solve the problem? Of course not. Because that is not the solution to the problem. The problem is, you don't even seem to know what the problem is. In a flash of a moment you are just offering a useless solution to a problem you don't seem to know. Dr. minister please sit down and analyze why our kids in the public educational system are doing so badly and don't just offer useless degrees thinking that will solve the problem.
