About 8 years ago a friend of mine(I will call Sam) who had been in America for almost 10 years returned home for a visit and fell sick with food poisoning. They took him to a Hospital here in Kumasi where he was admitted and his stomach pumped. The Nurses were incredibly rude and neglected him so badly that he almost developed other complications from that simple health care procedure.Sam's younger sister,a new Doctor based in Tema immediately came to Kumasi upon hearing of his sickness and had him moved home where he was treated. After his recovery Sam decided to go back to the hospital and thank one particular nurse who had been very helpful and kind to him. The"thank you"led to friendship which led to a love affair and in less than 2 years I was the best man at their wedding. She is now not only a mother of a healthy 4 year old baby girl but also the Senior Nurse at the Clinic her husband built for his Sister in Kumasi.

Giving someone who has hyperglycemia (high blood sugar) will not kill them as you reported. People have adverse reaction to diabetes because of insulin shock, which is too much insulation as compared to sugar. people who have undiagnosed diabetes often have chronic hyperglycemia. They don't drop dead just because they eat sugar. Symptoms include thirst, and frequent urination. If the condition persists it can eventually result in shortness of breath, fruity smelling breath, nausea and vomiting and very dry mouth. Medical treatment at this stage is needed, but does not result in immediate death. If in doubt as to if its high or low sugar, give sugar!
