Just imagine the huge money involved, even the person in the middle of this issue has said he will pay the money and so I don’t understand why those around him are fighting for him. “A person who does not have the nation at heart has issued dud cheques to an institution which is against the laws of the country. “Our party is in power now and we have the majority hand in parliament and so if the NDC are not comfortable when people are punished for squandering states money then the majority should make a law that will see to it that all those who are against such act and are always talking about political witch hunting are transferred to the Gambaga witch camp because they are all witches and don’t want the country to move forward” he said.

THE saying that 'the evil men do lives after them' manifested at the Appointments Committee of Parliament sitting yesterday when Victor Emmanuel Smith, Eastern Regional minister-designate, appeared before the committee to be vetted.

Mr Smith, former aide to Jerry John Rawlings, ate the humble pie when he backtracked on the series of falsehood he churned out when claiming to be a newspaper publisher.

It took the intervention of Edward Doe Adjaho, Chairman of the Committee, to save his skin when the chairman cleverly parried some of the questions for the minister-designate.

While managing a pro-NDC newspaper, Weekly Standard , Mr. Smith had published in 2008 that then President Agyekum Kufuor had been involved in a dubious $5 billion oil deal in Kuwait.

The publication still appeared to be an albatross hanging around the neck of the former Ghana Ambassador to the Czech Republic as it clearly showed in yesterday's public sitting of the Appointments Committee.

He was found visibly wanting when he was subjected to strict proof by a member of the Committee, Ambrose Dery, who is also the Deputy Minority Leader and MP for Lawra/Nandom.

'Mr. Victor Smith, you made the publication that President Kufuor was involved in a $ 5billion oil deal, can you prove this if you are put in the witness box today? Mr. Dery asked.

Mr. Smith replied, 'Mr. Chairman, as I sit here I cannot prove it.'

The former aide to ex-president Rawlings, who was sacked by the NDC founder through a text message, had earlier tried to justify the publication but was forced to beat the fast retreat when Mr. Dery pinned him down.

'The information was given to me by somebody close to former President Kufuor at the time I was managing a newspaper,' Mr. Smith claimed.

Mr. Dery asked 'As a person, do you know this to be true as you sit here today?'

Mr Smith replied, 'As a person, I cannot tell whether it is true or not.'

Eventually, he admitted he could not prove the allegation.

He also had a time hectic time in answering questions on various allegations he made in the media including the claim that the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration had attempted to kill former President Rawlings.

In a recent interview with Accra-based Citi FM, Mr. Smith said seven pick-ups loaded with armed security officers invaded the residence of the former President Rawlings with the prime motive to eliminate him.

However, when a member of the Appointments Committee, Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, asked him to prove the allegation, he again admitted he did not have any proof that the NPP administration intended to kill former President Rawlings but was only expressing his opinion on the matter.

According to him, when he saw the seven pick-ups loaded with armed security personnel at the residence of the former president, he believed 'it was a diabolical plan that could lead to the death of Mr. Rawlings'.

Obviously not satisfied with Victor's submission, Owusu-Agyemang further queried, 'What gave you the impression that seven pick-ups loaded with security officers could lead to the death of Mr. Rawlings?'

After a back-and-forth encounter that nearly flared tempers, Mr Doe Adjaho, Chairman of the Committee, admonished Victor Smith to learn how to receive and release information.

'You should know the information you put in the public domain and information you keep till you die,' Doe Adjaho, who is also the First Deputy Speaker and MP for Avenor/Ave, said.

First to appear before the Appointments Committee was Henry Ford Kamel, Volta regional minister-designate.

Mr. Kamel's vetting lasted for about 30 minutes, answering a few questions on his curriculum vitae.

Members of the Committee were almost unanimous in describing him as an affable person with exemplary humility.

'I am confident that with your humility and ability to work with other people, you will help to bring development to the Volta region,' Alhaji Abdul-Rashid Pelpuo, deputy majority leader, who is also the MP for Wa Central, noted.
