Nkonya-Alavanyo clash: Don't fight back – Letsa

The Volta Regional Minister, Dr Archibald Letsa, has described as shocking the renewed clashes between the people of Nkonya and Alavanyo in the Volta Region.

According to him, the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) and the District Security Council (DISEC) recently visited these areas to interact with the people on the need to ensure peace among themselves.

Accordingly, the people assured that they were going to ensure peace among themselves, hence it came as absolute shock when the news about the shooting emerged.

Two people believed to be Nkonyas have been killed in renewed clashes between their ethnic group and age-old rivals the Alavanyos in the Volta Region.

It is not clear what led to the renewed clashes but police say gunshots were fired from the Alavanyo side, according to soldiers who monitored the attack on the ground.

The incident took place despite a curfew on the area which was renewed on Wednesday.

Speaking on this development with Accra News on Thursday April 20, Dr Letsa said: “We visited there not long ago, so we were shocked yesterday to hear that three people were attacked. They were actually tapping palm wine at the outskirt of the town and they were shot by the unknown assailants. The security agencies were mobilised to come around and calm has been restored into the area.

“There is an ongoing meeting between the District Security Council and the Regional Security Council. We will go to the community and try to see the way forward and also to assure the people that the law enforcement agencies are on top of the issue and, therefore, nobody should take the law into their own hands.”
