Back in 1979 one dean called Baffoe Bonnie did the same thing to me. With my aggregate 6 grade (Gov't A, Econ B & Geo C) that guy turned me down for Land Economy.
In fact he told me he has seen that Legon has given me Pol. Sc. & Sociology, so I should give my position to somebody.
I lost my mind right there in his office. I had gone to query him about why he would not take me but accepted two students that I personally know - those students had come to my school to retake their A-Level courses at AMASS through the special afternoon classes, yet still my grades were better than their combined grades.
When I challenged him on that and mentioned the names of those students, he hit the roof telling me I can't dictate to him and that the minimum qualification was two Es. Before then he had lied that students are admitted on merits. People were telling me that chain smoking dean was also a womanizer and perhaps I should have sent a female relative to grease his palms.
That is how I ended at Legon, not that I wanted to go there. Something should be done about this. Those tin gods at academia should be brought to book. How can the best student in all of West Africa not get the course he wants but some second bananas would get in? Some money has exchanged hands. Shame! 40 years after me, the same underhands are still continuing.

The universities have in Ghana are interesred in admitting foreign students who pay more than the students of Ghanaian descend. As a result of that they admit more foreign students whose grades are not better than applicants from Ghana. The effect is that we will not be able to fill the doctors gap in our hospital as few are admitted and trained. They did it to a friend at Legon in 2007,Seth a student from Pass whose results was excellentand far better than most applicants from Nigeria, Gambia was not allowed to do medicine as a course. He wept for weeks because he didn't like the course the school latter gave him.

KNUST Medical School admits about 300 students yearly. And the breakdown is this : 100slots for foreigners, 100 slots for Ghanaian fee-payers and 100 slots for normal entrants. In 2016, 341 students had 8A's in the WASSCE, and a higher percentage of these people, who were science students, applied for medicine to fight for consideration in the 100 slot vacancy for normal entrants. There are several students who had 8A's, but who equally could not get medicine, because of their abysmal performances at the interview. I know a someone who had 8A's, but was given pharmacy instead of Medicine. Again, there was another who had 8A's, but was denied medicine, but since he had money, he accepted to enrol in the Medical as a fee-payer. By the way, KNUST did not know that Pius was the overall best student, because admission was done before WAEC came out this year to tell who was the overall best WASSCE student.

He has shown better cognitive skills for pre med. You do not memorize in Science and mathematics but have to understanding concepts and apply the concepts to solve problems. He has done his part and shown he has the capability to understand and retain information. What deeper understanding do they want from him again? Ghana does not teach critical thinking skills, leadership skills or research at high school level, so what else do they expect from the young man? I wish I can get to him and in 8 years you will come and tell us your corrupt Ananse story. Excuses for crooked, incompetent, wicked system that uses bribery to promote the weak to fail the best and brightest. What a failed system turned on its head. Let me tell you, left to the corrupt systems some of would died from dinking due to the impediments the system set in our way. But what is to to be will be.

He can define anything u ask him to ONLY in writing on the blackboard or in his books. However, if u ask him to stand up an define lets say why ECONOMICS is a branch of science, he cannot do so orally. There are some people like that. When it comes to answering questions orally, they are found wanting. However, if you give them a chalk to write or book, they are super. Perhaps that is what happened at the interview hence he not being enrolled for as a Medical Doctor. But he will still become a Doctor in Optometry. He should take it like that. Afterwards he can travel to Germany or England to do Medicine.

If you listen to the Interview well you will realize that the young man is not the type who lacks confidence or lacks ability to express himself. He is not just brilliant but wise and intelligent. Listen to his diction, his expression of thought, and his capacity to reason even adhocly for an interview he has not prepared for. Do you think he will play the dummy for what he's prepared for in pursuit of his dream career? Let's not go there. It's just the rotten system that doee not reward hardwork and merits of the best but put golden rings in the noses of pigs who buy favor through bribery.
But thanks Kobby for being the voice for all the voiceless who have been unjustly ripped of their opportunities like Pius. At least it will prick informed consciences and awaken the just people in all our institutions who don't endorse such rots.

The will give you an equally good course which is not financially demanding as the one you opted for.

What is the logic in your defense of this unreasonably unpatriotic action of our public institutions.
Granted that what you are saying is true, shouldn't our institutions/country rather give intelligent youths like this young ambitious guy a scholarship to encourage and help them to achieve their dreams. Must they rather kill their dreams. Any enlightened and progressive nation/institution would have offered this boy a scholarship to: (1) help him achieve his career objective, (2) contribute ambitiously to nation-building and (3) help the university to also improve its competitive standing.
What a doomed nation! What a country full of retrogressive, greedy unpatriotic nation wreckers?

It is about time the people who assume responsibility and authority in our institutions work with dignity, fairness and transparency. The criteria used in selecting students to any of the school of health sciences is written examinations and interviews. It is through these processes that human underhands are seen. Pius Kyere 's case is not new. Three years ago, my daughter passed through the same injustices when she passed the examination and interview to the University of Ghana Medical School, but was made a fee paying student. Yet another student with less grades than her at the WASSCE was made regular student. What can say, but to quote Shakespeare, "You can not find a man 's construction in his face." I rest my case.

Dear Piurs Kyere apply to Harvard Medical College, Yale University, Standford University, Johns Hopkins University Medical School in Maryland, one of the top medical schools in the US, all in the USA and you will be college bound to the premed program by close of Summer 2017. They will gladly offer you scholarship. Don't give up on your dreams to be a Cardio Surgeon. Congrats and ood luck Pius. Your first step is to go to the US Embassy in Accra and ask to speak to the Educational Attache'. You can also talk to the British Embassy Educational conselor to ask about Cambridge University or Oxford University. You are most likely if offered admissions, to be placed in an honors program. The SPCCAG & Africa wishes you well. I will suggest you talk to Dr. Arthur Kennedy, a US trainned Physician and lecturer at the Cape Coast University Teaching Hospital. Just stay put at Tech for now, it will give you a leg up when you enter any of the medical schools mentioned above while you undertake those searches

Any body thinking this young man may have failed the interview must be a liar or a joker. You heard him speak as in the clip. Is the language that of some one who cannot communicate effectively? Surely no. A wrong is a wrong, period. The selection was poorly done and there is no other explanation. Saying others had As cannot mean that his As were the lowest. The best student for Ghana and West Africa in 2016 will surely not be the worst compared to other year groups. Let us call a spade by its real name rather than say it is a big spoon. The young lad has not been treated fairly. Pure and simple.
