I think most Ghanaians are totally unaware of what Dr Atuguba said, based on happenings in Nigeria. I am fully aware, since the main direction of my business is towards Nigeria. In fact, that's what is sustaining my business, especially the procurement payments and currency movements.

Some Nigerian clients opposed to President Buhari's election hold me responsible for convincing many people to support him. But now, I am a vocal critic of some of his policies to combat corruption which have thrown the Nigerian economy into the doldrums: recession - actually deflation - with the naira losing value beyond imagination (it reached up 630 to the £, from about the 280 when he took over) before the recent reversal of all the embargoes placed on foreign currency dealings were lifted, bring it down to 460/70 at the Forex rate. Still appreciating in leaps and bounds.

Life in Nigeria has become a misery with the ordinary people bearing the brunt of the so-called fight against corruption which embargoed the whole economy, instead of a selective or targeted approach at individual suspects. E.g., domiciliary accounts were blocked for everyone, including Nigerian expats for a long time. Of course, it'd be unwise to further remit your money into such accounts, thus blocking part of the $10bn-20bn Nigerians are reported variously to remit home p.a.

Fighting corruption must not disrupt and make live more miserable for ordinary people, young and old, the sick, students abroad, etc., whose lives don't depend on corruption, even if they themselves are victims of corruption. Curbing corruption is supposed to make live better for the ordinary people, the main victims and losers in a corrupt society. If that doesn't happen, and the reverse is the case, people will yearn for old status quo.

In any case, when the PNDC was fighting corruption by all kinds of unorthodox, strong-armed methods, were they not opposed and vilified by mainly sections of the population that have found shelter within the NPP?

That's the context within which we must interpret what Prof R said.

Dr Atuguba, your problem is that you have the tendency (perhaps unintended) to trivialize and rubbish issues that people painstakingly think through. That posturing presents you, sometimes, as a politically biased academic. I listened to your presentation at the seminar and I came to this very conclusion that I'm putting across here. The fight against corruption is so tied to our future survival as a nation to the extent that when any group of people come up with an idea on how to combat this menace, the least you can do is to add value to their proposals rather than carelessly throwing it away. A word to wise is enough.
