Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu is the real name of the Majority Leader. His real name is Lawrence Addae. He changed his name on entering KNUST to hide his embarrassing background.
Lawrence Addae was a thief in the secondary and everybody knew it. One day he broke into the school store and was caught red-handed stealing and dismissed. Thus, on entering KNUST, he changed his name to whitewash his shameful past.
These are the men now governing Ghana. The so-called president's background is even more disgraceful. More on this to come.

Like the majority leader I subscribe to using English solely in parliament. However, if I were to play devil's advocate, I certainly will go for Hausa (spoken widely in West Africa), Nzema (spoken in GH and Ivory Coast), Ewe (spoken in GH, Benin, Togo and Nigeria) or skip all these and go for East Africa's Swahili and Lingala.
To those who keep dreaming about Twi becoming the defacto national language. Don't even go there. Twi is as useless as my Adangme by the way. Go outside the confines of GH and you're stuck and goodness help you if you can't speak English or French :)

Instead of encouraging learning English, we want to encourage twinglish. Maybe too much fufu and banku has skewed our thinking.

It is the WISDOM that comes out of a lingo is what matters but not having others lingo shoved down your throat.
Osei, you don't look English to me and moreover, you have been subjected to English since your generation..........how come your policies have put us in ABJECT POVERTY? And the Chinese stealing our rich natural resources under our noses, whilst we are busy chasing NDC / NPP cars and speaking 'BIG, 'BIG English.
Does the speaking of English give you any wisdom at all? How come the Chinese builds the whole seats in parliament? Why can't we do them ourselves with all the English?
So, please THINK and realize that there's more to it, than aping other people.
We need to WAKE UP GHANAIANS!!! The Chinese and Japanese Premiers don't speak lingos of others......their lingos are translated....does it make them less of a human???

The solution is obviously NOT English!!!! Language really matters!!! Why are we still where we are after all this speaking of English? Please tell me.
As you rightly put it....the Germans speak German, the British speak English so, are we British?
Please come up with a better solution than the defeatist solution of speaking English.......
Let me enlighten you a bit.....most of our citizens speak other people's lingos anyway. And majority of us speak the lingo of the majority of our society. (I am avoiding being drawn into tribal bigotry arguments).
So, we can make it mandatory during our formative years till high education we learn each others' lingos. (And with that I mean the most popularly/commonly spoken lingos). Our registration for National ID cards should be the basis of how to establish who we are and solutions to some of our problems.
It's about time we start THINKING AND USE OUR GOD-GIVEN BRAINS!!!
MOST OF THE NATIONS YOU MENTIONED ARE IN THE EU......how do you think they communicate?????
Please come up with ideas and don't blow the same trumpet since our birth.

Clearly we have more issues than I thought. Ideas and the courage to see them through in an environment that is enabling and glued together by mutual respect for each other is what makes the bigger difference.
Infact I'd argue that it is the English language that has broken down cultural and ethnic differences right from school that has got us to where we are now. Without it we'll all be living in our little enclaves and balkanised states and fighting just as our ancestors used to do.

I speak and understand the English language just as well as my native Adangme. If I were a Member of Parliament my fluency or skills in speaking either of the aforementioned languages will certainly not affect the critical thinking I need to undertake to effect change in my country. The people who changed the world - giving us the light bulb, the internet, mobile phones, cars etc did so by coming up with ideas that solved problems in their societies and drove through those ideas with sheer persistence and force. I don't see English as foreign. It is a language that transcends its original borders and is now a world/global language. I own and speak it just as well as any English man (probably better actually). It's not that difficult to pick up. I'd suggest you spend more of your time mastering it (as well as your native language) rather than trying to stealthily force twi on Ghanaians. A word to the wise.......

In my opinion Ghana has come a long way to nationalize one language which is widely spoken in Ghana. All dialects under Akan can be classified as one under this nationalization proposal. In other words "Twi, Fanti, etc which is widely spoken in Ghana could be used. I do not think this shall be a problem at all since all Ghanaians who can or cannot be fluent in English could be said to be literally good in any akan dialect. I mean any Ghanaian who is not fluent in English happens to be able to speak akan fluently. The problem of not being fluent in English yet one would want such high profile job as parliamentarian is almost always associated with akan speaking people. I am saying this with my demographic studies and experience.
