Visit United States or Norway, and you will see forest every where Why don't we have aesthetic values at all? The whole country will become savannah in less than twenty years.

Nana and his NPP government should embark upon reafforestation through forestry depart, department of environment, colleges and universities. Deforestation is a single threat to Ghana's way of life.

Thank God that NPP administration has seen the urgent of our environmental degradation by P/NDC notorious governments.

In plain words, parliament should make laws to abolish certain activities like galamsey and wanton felling of timber in our forests. If parliament should fail, Nana can decree that galamsey and felling of timber without replacement be abolished.

I wept for joy today when I read this article from the President and that of Hon. Dr. Zanator Rawlings on Tree Planting and environmental degradation in Ghana. This ist the moment I have been waiting for a long time, that politicians identify the problem and personally involve themselves in solving it as Hon. Zanator is taking up tree planting as a major environmental issue in Ghana.
I am a Forest Research Scientist based in Germany. In 1995, I initiated a Tree Planting Project „Planting of Trees on Ghanaian School compounds“ with 4 Schools in the Central Region but now increased to 75, with school children planting beautiful trees on their School compounds. Solar lamps as incentive have been introduced into the project. A child gets a free solar lamp when he/she plants 4 trees and caters for them for 6 Months. Since every child is eager to receive a solar lamp, thousands of trees are being planted. A modern tree nursery has just been completed in September 2016 where 8000 tree seedlings have already been nursed and distributed. The project is sustainable since it is being guided by environmental education.
I cannot narrate all problems encounted so far but these include: Government institututions hindering my work instead of supporting me (For instance I have to pay full duty on the solar lamps I brought in 2008 and 2016 for the project because they are not educational material); ECG cutting down some of the trees without compensation, using the forests created on the school compounds as toilet- and wee smoking grounds etc.
Infact, any time I wanted to give up, I receive support and encouragement especially from German schools which partner some of the Project schools in Ghana and donors to continue the project. I am therefore hope that the President’s concern on the environment and Hon. Dr. Zanator Rawlings’ tree planting initiative are going to give an impetus to my project. Then the children must know why they are planting the trees and defend them when some one wants to take or destroy them and handle like Hon. Zanator in their future positions. This can only be realised when sustainable tree planting is combined with environmental education. I am therefore appealing to the responsible Authotities to make tree planting and Environmental Education compulsory in schools.

Even in colonial days, the white peoples thought us how to conserve our resources and replant our trees and conservation of our environments. Despite the spread of Agricultural colleges and our universities, many like studying law and banking and social studies without changing our mentalities. Many government officials, chiefs and bogus companies authorize bogus companies and individual foreigners permits to cut our mahogany trees and minerals by Chinese companies, some foreign Africans without permission. We must conserve and preserve our resources.
