There was near pandemonium and confusion at the Annual Global African Investment Forum held in Westminster, Central London after a heated exchange between Ghana’s President John Mahama and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo degenerated into open insults.This was due to General Obasanjo openly accusing the Ghanaian president and his government of blackmailing and collecting bribes from Nigerian businessmen in Ghana, buying numerous properties in Nigeria and South Africa and financially contributing 12 million dollars to Goodluck Jonathan’s campaign last year. This infuriated President Mahama who lost his temper and pointing his finger, called General Obasanjo an ” idiot” and a “silly buffoon”.It took other ministers present as well as Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni to calm tempers and usher President Mahama to a nearby room. The forum, which takes place from 1st to 3rd December is attended by African Heads of States, Ministers, Private equity firms and investors to discuss opportunities for investment and development in African Economies.

These taxes has been there since time in memorial and its goes to the district assembly and not the central government. Scrapping duties and taxes should cover everything in the country. Our sea and airport should be free and not only spare parts dealers just because they supported Npp to come back to power. Ghana is for us all not only people in spare parts business.

I believe what the Minister of Finance was refering to is the market tolls paid by all traders and others who ply their trade in the various markets run by the MMDAs. The determination of these tolls, fees, rates, levies, etc ...

I believe what the Minister of Finance was refering to is the market tolls paid by all traders and others who ply their trade in the various markets run by the MMDAs. The determination of these tolls, fees, rates, levies, etc is done by these District Assemblies under a fee-fixing resolution at the beginning of every financial year. The power to do so by the assemblies is derived from the Local Govt Service Act (Act 462). To give meaning to what the Minister said in the budget, cabinet through the Ministry of Local Govt has to advise the assemblies not to include tolls taken from kayayei in their next fee-fixing resolutions. In any case tolls, levies, fees, etc are all forms of taxes at the local level not imposed by the central govt headed by any president It is only the assemblies that can abolish them.
