My boss is from Hong Kong, she does not speak or write the best English, but she is one of the best in her field. If you are not going to become a writer, lawyer or politician a teacher.... all you need is just enough English to get you around.

Let me tell you frankly, Mr Africanus, when you meet two Ghanaians speaking English, then know that they are from two different tribes. We are too proud of our local languages. The French speaking countries in Africa adopt the French more than we adopt the English language, which is a unifying language. Read what people write in the papers, poor grammar, tenses mixed up etc etc. Don't blinfold people with your ideas, please!

Now we are holding ourselves back more and more by speaking Akan in most of our daily activities. The TV and radio programs are in most cases conducted in Akan. How can we be fluent in English ? How do we learn new vocabulary or construct good English ? In some English speaking advanced countries, you can simply be denied advancement on the job because your accent is too strong. If you are a teacher, the students can complain that they cannot understand you. Why do We then keep on shooting ourselves in the foot, by sticking too much to a language that does not help us in the global arena ?

But the English language in itself does not make us creative, innovative and productive. It is only a means of communicating, of which we do not have to waste too much time trying to become the best. Nigerians don't pay much attention to pronunciations yet they have produced Nobel Laureate in Literature. Look at the quality of English films produced by the Nigerians and compare it to that of Ghana. I think we need educational reforms at the basic, secondary and tertiary levels of our educational system.

Like it or not, we have been 'civilized' by the Western World. We cannot pretend to challenge everything that is pro-Western as bogus. What we have to do is to adapt what they have provided us to perfect what is ours to our own benefit.

Nobody shd be surprised @ this; 1) We have turned our socio political discourses into the local Twi language. ln our social gatherings we have chosen the Twi dialect to be the lingua franca of the country Ghana;3) Speak English in a public place like in a bus & every one stares at you as a misfit. 4) FM Radio stations have become the yardsticks for measuring up one's competence in the local Twi language. 5) this is a political tool being used by the NPP party where Akufo Addo the president declared publicly :Yen Akan fuo" meaning " We the Akan people.
ln fact the rating in subsequent years will surely be worse than this year.
In deed it is a LINGUISTIC XENOPHOBIC situation in Ghana, Nothing less yhan that.

We should be proud of our own language's not someone's language. I will do my best to learn other languages but don't expect me to be the same as them. No matter what, you can't be the same as them. Why do we force our people to learn someone's language in the first place? Developing your own country do not depend on learning English. Most of the developed countries don't even speak English. I have met most of white people from other countries who doesn't no how to speak English. We are wasting our time on learning this english language over 60yrs after we got independence and we are still the same.

We are still dwelling on this CHEW, POUR, PASS AND FORGET cycle of regurgitating of someone else's 'lingo' on a piece of paper for grades; and expect to develop as a nation? And for that matter, AFRICA?

The individual who REGURGITATES all that is chewed best, is honoured with high grades at the end of an academic year........

The high he or she stays in the so-called education system and repeats huge sum of this cycle, the more they are rewarded with higher degrees of no significance to OUR AFRICAN SOCIETY!!

Even most English people can't read or write their own 'lingo'. Please go research!!!!

And sadly the cycle continues and the same results being churned out in the outcome of our present day society. What a WOW???

The results of such CRAP is as follows: defecating in public, filth all around us, a little rain floods everywhere, can't design and construct our own roads, railway lines, dams, solar energy, atomic energy, mine our own rich natural resources (and yet have so-called engineers who speak 'BIG, 'BIG ENGLISH for NOTHING), import toothpicks from China, watch the Chinese/Indians carrying out galamsey on our lands and polluting our rivers (whilst we chase after cars).........With all the English we have been speaking, what have we achieved??? NOTHING!!!!!!!

And they won't allow you to correct them when they are so glaringly wrong. As far as I know, the one person who speaks impeccable English is Nana Akufo Addo. I am no political fan of his, being a die-hard NDC man myself; I am just giving credit where credit is due.
