These traditional institutions supported every military dictatorship that Ghana has ever had. When Rawlings overthrew the constitutionally elected government of Hilla Limann in a brutal bloody manner, the traditional institutions were the first to congratulate Rawlings. When Rawlings abducted and murdered the three high court judges on June 30, 1982 not a single traditional ruler expressed shock or reprimanded Rawlings.

  I am disappointed in the Kwamena Duncan's meeting with the chiefs. My disappointment evolves around the fact that he did not specifically draw the views of the chiefs as to how they should exert their traditional and cultural authority to stem out some behaviors and activities that are destroying people and environment in their communities. Example, galamsey, teenage pregnancy, drug use and alcoholism by underage boys and girls, just to mention a few.
