Sanitary conditions in Ghana is bad because of lack of town planning and bad cultural practices.If we refuse to tackle this head on we risk becoming one large refuse dump with pockets of livable spaces.What is ailing Accra and Tamale today will be tomorrow's problem for Eastern,Volta and Ashanti regions.We need a comprehensive plan that will tackle our sanition,sewage and drainage crises together.Time only adds to the problem so the sooner the better.

This practice is as old as Ghana herself and as long as we have refused to grow, it will continue unabated. I blame how the foundation of our dear nation was set up. As we speak, we are building houses with "manhole" instead of a sewage system where our waste will have a smooth flow to where it should go like the US or elsewhere.

The laws of the land should be cracked and spare no one. Those caught in this act should face hefty fines or a year in prison. Yeah, some may see me as "a do no wrong guy" but does it make sense to defecate openly in this time in our history? Yeah, that is when we refuse to grow.

Next is our resort to public toilet. Politicians even promise these. These are so nasty I won't like to enter. To worsen KVIPs have become gold mines for foot soldiers who now charge exorbitant fees. So who will pratonise these nasty smelly places. And you can't hoard the stuff inside you.

Above all, it is the complete misunderstanding of the problem by people in authority and the likes of Akwasi Kyei who are fueling the problem: THEY THINK THE IS CAUSE and falsely diagnose that the public attitude is the cause. But is rather the attitude of those in authority that must change. And the attitudinal change needed is to real die that PUBLIC TOILETS are the sole cause of open defecation.

In Burkina Faso,as in deed Gambia and all other countries, the laws on toilets in houses is strictly enforced and so you find open defecation there
