Africa's problems and standing in the world is dependent on the economic and political situations on the ground. If we call ourselves independent and every other Friday, our leaders are out there in the world hat in hand, looking for some money to borrow, why will anybody consider us serious. Does this sound like an independent country to you? Hell, no!
Our standing in the world is not due to our customs and traditions (most which are no longer practiced) but the perpetual inability of African countries to provide for our own basic needs and improve the lot of our people.
Yes, Ghana gained 'independence' in 1957 just around the same period as Malaysia (1957), Singapore (1965), South Korea (1945) and Indonesia (1945). What do we have to show for it? Essentially nothing! All these countries have something to show for theirs. And, it comes with some respect!
Except Kwame Nkrumah, none of our leaders had any long term goals for the country's development. Thieves like Kuffuor and Rawlings have ruled us recently; we don't know the extent of the financial damage of a Mahama Presidency yet. Don't forget about Afrifa, Acheampong, Liman and all the other 'place-holders' that at some stage in our demise had become our 'leaders'. Our country is continuously being pillaged by our political leaders and their cronies. Our elections only result in the replacement of a group of looters and thieves with a fresh group of looters and thieves!
At any rate, is this Ghana thing working for us? So why do we keep recycling the same kinds of leaders. Nkrumah's kids are back in politics; Akuffo Addo's kid is back in politics; so is a child of Rawlings. The children of Kuffuor, Mills and Mahama might do the same soon. I am kind of surprised Busia's kids haven't shown up yet. Oh well, maybe they are just late.

Where else in Ghana would you see a congregation of such eminent personalities at the funeral of a queenmother? Where else will the military be pall bearers of the coffin of a queenmother? Has this got something to do with the particular culture concerned? Please if you belong to a tribe and it has a culture, celebrate it and be proud of it as the Ashantis are of theirs.
