How many hours did they spend together before leaving the lady to go home alone ? If he had got the sense to go and call the lady in their house late night,why did he not escort the woman to her house after enjoying themselves into the very wee hours of the night ?

People keep going on about DNA being performed on the suspect. Of course they will find some form of the deceased' DNA on the suspect as he has confessed that he spent time together with the woman. What actually needs to be done is looking for the suspect's DNA on the knife and then link both. If his DNA is found on the weapon that was used to kill the deceased, then together with other circumstantial evidence eg he was the last person to see the deceased, whether he had a valid alabi etc. Easy crime to solve really.
