Believe me; Ghanaians have always rejected the so called "ex-gratia" ever since it was imposed on them. They didn't oppose it because it was proposed by NPP or NDC; they rather saw it as a cunning way of stealing their meager resources by the unsympathetic so-called leaders. When Kufour rewarded himself with the huge ex-gratia, Ghanaians, including members of his own party, condemned it and wrote many articles against it. They even asked Mills not to honour it but he did. So, this has nothing to do with NDC or NPP, but has a lot to do with our greedy leaders wanting to continue living on the poor suffering masses even after leaving office.

The whole issue of ex-gratia makes our democracy unnecessarily too expensive. In fact the salaries paid to our politicians bear no semblance to that of the civil service. This should not be the case. There is no reason why a member of parliament should earn more than the headmaster of a secondary school or principal of a training college. They cannot have political power and be rewarded with financial power as well. In the developed world you have one and not both. In the U.K., the mayor of London earns more than the prime minister. And the salary of an MP is far less than that of the headmaster of a comprehensive secondary school. The opposite, however exist in Ghana where the most powerful person in the country is also the highest paid person. This is not right. Those that set these emoluments should study what exists in US and Britain, after all that is where we copied our constitution and democracy from. Why should it be different when it comes to money.

NDC never learns. All they think about is money grabbing. Mahama is a thief any day.

Check your math..
This wrong if you are calculating the increase:
15972/22809 x(100) = 70.02%.
It should be:
(22808 - 15972)/15972 x(100) = 42.8%.

In the country he lives, former presidents are offered a taxable lifetime pension equal to the annual rate of basic pay for the heads of executive branch departments, like the Cabinet Secretaries. This amount is set annually by Congress and is currently (2016) $205,700 per year. The pension starts the minute the president officially leaves office at noon on Inauguration Day. Widows of former presidents are provided with a $20,000 annual lifetime pension and mailing privileges unless they choose to waive their right to the pension
The Former Presidents Act (FPA) passed in 1958 makes it mandatory for ex-presidents, ministers and congressmen enjoy good retirement package. The presidential retirement benefits have included a lifetime annual pension, staff and office allowances, travel expenses, Secret Service protection and more. Ex-President G. W. Bush retired with $199,700 per year excluding numerous incentives. And President Barrack H. Obama with take home $205,700 per year, a house and generous package.
Ex-Ghanaian presidents didn’t work for donkeys, they worked as hard as any president erstwhile. So Prof Kwaku Asare should not bring his bias attitude here this time

The Ex-Gratia serves as an icing on their cake that they steal from us over the period they serve in their respective posts.
It is what affirms their ultimate motive to be in Politics and reach those positions the benefit applies to.
What irks me most is the fact they always have these dubious payments retro-activated.
Meanwhile, our Nurses, Doctors, and Teachers might still have their salaries stuck in arrears for years and would not even get interests on what is due them, even if the bare salaries ever get paid.
How selfish, greedy and corrupt could these leaders be!
Holding Political Office in Ghana has become a lucrative wealth-making club membership that the loudmouths with scholarly prowess troop to become to guarantee themselves riches beyond what their ordinary skills could ever pay them.
They have taken the common Citizens for a ride for far too long, under the guise of the so-called 'Property-Owning Democracy'. And they do not waste time in demonizing any dissenting voices against such milking of our State coffers with epithets like being anti-Capitalist, Socialists, etc.
No, every Ghanaian would want to see a healthy Capitalist environment thrive. But it is only when the system is without such crony back-watching and -scratching corrupt behavior that we can have such an environment. The competition in the Capitalist environment is, thus, by unwritten, informal design skewed against the majority of Citizens.
How could any Government that fails the Nation so badly with numerous corruption scandals and misappropriation of funds that starves its ordinary workers, and fails to eradicate schools-under-trees have the guts to pay itself so much in Ex-Gratia? The Parliament is part of that Government, in this case. The Ex-Gratia does not go to only the Executive branch. The MPs share in it, too.
Long Live Ghana!!!
