A female reporter, interviewing a Winneba Ghanaian chief during the dear hunting festival, asked the significance of the
Varied number of feathers in Winneba chief headdresses.
"Feathers show number of sexual partners," the chief replied. Indicating a nearby young brave,
He continued, "Him? One woman, one feather. Him ?" pointing to a second, older man,
"Three women, three feathers."
The reporter looked at the Chief's headdress. "But you have so many feathers!"
The Chief proudly slapped his chest. "Me Chief. Sleep with all women. Big, small, fat, tall."
Horrified, the female reporter said, "You ought to be hung!"
The Chief said, "Damn right. Me hung big like buffalo, long like snake."
The offended reporter said, "You don't have to be hostile!"
The Chief replied, "Hoss-style, dog-style, wolf-style, any style!"
The reporter cried, "Oh, dear!"
"No deer", said the Chief. "Ass too high, run too fast!"

Most of our chiefs now are very capable, highly educated, resourceful, and wise. Their talents and abilities are needed in governance. The constitution, as it currently exists, bar them from participating in active party politics not governance which they already do traditionally. Even with this, the greedy bunch among them can't or blatantly refuse to abstain themselves. The challenging issue is the thin line between "politricks" and governance. If there is a way to involve them in governance, I believe it will be in the interest of Ghana.

India's nationaliust leaders who freed their country from British colonial rule (and its post-independence leaders) understood clearly that inherited privilege is the greatest enemy of meritocracy - and eventually got rid of India's Maharajahs for that reason.
Today, India is a technologically proficient society and a global economic power - whiles Ghana marches time and puts up with the Chieftaincy institution in the name of traditional culture.
What we need is true grassroots democracy in which unit committee members, district assembly members and district chief executives are all elected to 4-year terms and paid well to bring about economic development at the grassroots level countrywide.
That is the only way to bring about real change at the grassroots level. Electing local leaders will make them more responsive to the needs of local people.
If we are so enamoured with the idea of being ruled by Chiefs, why do we not simply get rid of the Chieftaincy institution in its present form - and also take over all lands in Ghana held in trust by Chiefs for their people: and turn them into community land banks that landless people can apply for land to farm on or build on?
And on the basis that all Ghanaians are "royals" can we not turn our countery into an elected monarchy that elects a Ghana Omanpanin who will have a 5-year tenure and cannot serve for more than two terms?
No underdeveloped nation in which inherited privilege exists can ever become a prosperous and egalitarian society.
If we want Ghana to become an African equivalent of the egalitarian societies of Scandinavia, we must first rid our country of the Chieftaincy institution and entrench grassroots democracy by electing unit committee members, district assembly members and district chief executives - all of whom ought to be free to run in such local elections as political party candidates if they so wish. Chieftaincy cannot be reformed - it must rather be abolished.

Nana was elected to fix the real problems of Ghana, and not dabble in chieftaincy. People like Nana and Kuffour who have links to royal families have been promoting the institution in Ghana. In fact, J. B. Danquah campaigned for the British to hand over to the chiefs.
Chieftaincy belongs in the past and is out of place in a democracy. The idea of a family being set above others to rule them in pertuity is absurd in a modern society.
Most of our chiefs have caused great harm to their communities, including participating in the slave trade for their personal gain, selling most of the stool lands (sometimes to multiple buyers), and more recently destroying our environment and water bodies by making land available for galamsey and to Fulani herdsmen to graze their cattle and terrorise farmers in their communities.
Chiefs are not accountable. They are not elected by their people, nor can they be voted out.
Any attempt by Nana and Co. to promote chieftaincy in Ghana, to pursue the misguided campaign of his uncle JB Danquah will be fiercely resisted. He should focus on the job at hand. If anything, chieftaincy should be dismantled and the lands nationalised.
