Julius Debrah's rhetoric was not meant to address any health concerns about Kalyppo, if any, but rather a sarcasm in response to a political taunting of the opposition leader by the governing party, gone wrong.

NDC is running a-non-issue based politics. Ghana has many challenges which require a serious-minded leadership to tackle, but NDC seems oblivious of it, and only concerned about getting re-elected.

I saw some seriousness in socio-economic issues in practical terms during Pres. Kufour's NPP time in office( but as at now, all has, but dissipated). Ghana requires that kind of efforts from whichever government that gets the mandate. In my opinion so far, NDC has fallen short of that political will, expediency and competency. Instead, political discourses are trivialized into even "kalyppolitics" and sarcasm by NDC. Such JOKES are not worth-entertaining or required at any point in our political dispensation.

People do not usually insult Kuffour because he lives as a statesman.

There is more to the verdict by an Accra High Court on Monday that Mrs. Konadu Agyeman Rawlings is the rightful owner of 15 percent of the divested Ghana Rubber Estates Limited, than meets the eye.

On the surface, it was a purely a judicial duty performed by Mr. Justice George K. Koomson. But the ramifications are far and wide. How the wife of Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings came to buy shares in a divested state enterprise in 1995, when her husband sat at the old slave Castle as constitutional Head of State of this Republic, is a mystery that invites the former President to unravel.

Here is a revolutionary leader, who owes his leadership of this society to a house-cleaning exercise he undertook in the course of which scores of Ghanaians were needlessly killed, and a great number of businessmen denied of their properties in the name of ridding this society of corruption.

In the name of the so-called house-cleaning exercise, business gurus of substance lost their enterprises. In some cases, their lives were sacrificed as well. Mr. J.K. Siaw, who built the biggest brewery in West Africa, had his Tata Brewery confiscated to the state, on the flimsy excuse that he had hoarded sugar and had failed to meet his tax obligations.

Mr. Siaw died a pauper in exile in Liberia. His brewery was sold and resold. It is now owned by Guinness Ghana Breweries Limited, which now operates the Achimota Brewery.

It is impossible to write about victims of Mr. Rawlings’ atrocities to fellow humans without recalling the sad story of Mr. B.A. Mensah, who established the International Tobacco Limited at North Industrial Area in Accra, and manufactured Rothman King Size cigarettes to rival then foreign-owned Pioneer Tobacco Company, manufacturers of 555 cigarettes.

Many Ghanaians may not know this, but the Police Hospital at Cantoments in Accra owes its genesis to an enterprise by a Ghanaian business tycoon. Edward Osei Yaw Boakye was the first businessman in Ghana to set up a factory to produce mattresses locally. Before then ‘Vono’ mattress was imported. As part of his scheme, he set up a clinic at Cantoments. In honour of his enterprise Yaw Boakye was referred to simply as ‘Boakye Mattress.’ What happened next tells every story of man’s inhumanity to his fellow man. When Jerry John Rawlings seized power in 1979, and again in 1981, both the mattress factory and the clinic were seized from him. He ended up, first thrown into detention, before going into exile.

The story is endless. There is Appenteng Appiah-Menkah, who set up the Apino Soap factory to rival Lever Brothers in the production of toiletries. Jerry John Rawlings mounted a public platform and invited Ghanaians not to patronise his products. Appiah-Menkah was not the only businessman to suffer this naked abuse of use of power. Reverend Kwabena Darko’s poultry enterprise suffered the same fate. If the local poultry industry is suffering now, it has its genesis in the treatment meted out to Rev. Darko.

The collapse of the local manufacturing base could be traced to the intervention of Jerry John Rawlings into local politics, and his hunt against entrepreneurs identified as enemies of the so-called revolution.

The deliberate ploy to deny businessmen their hard earned enterprises aside, the notorious human rights abuses the two Rawlings regimes deliberately visited on Ghanaians killed local initiatives. Yesterday, I was reading parts of Journalist Mike Adjei’s prison memoirs -‘Death and Pain: Rawlings Ghana,’ which chronicle’s his personal encounter with Jerry Rawlings’ angels of death, and got the impression that it is necessary for Ghanaians to have a feel of what life was behind bars in the heady days of the so-called revolution.

According to Mr. Adjei, while detained at the Special Branch, now Bureau of National Investigations, headquarters at Ridge in Accra, snippets of chilling information were related live to inmates about the killing of six suspects arrested in connection with the June 19 coup attempt, in which eight rebels, led by Corporal Halidu Gyiwa, invaded the national capital and announced the overthrow of the PNDC in 1983.

Quoting an account by a soldier, Mr. Adjei wrote: “One of our men went to the Border Guards (now Immigration headquarters) and another rank on duty told him WO1 Adjei Boadi, the PNDC member, went there around 4:00 pm and told the sergeant in charge of the guardroom, he wanted to see the dissidents who were arrested, after taking part in the coup and were escaping to the Republic of Togo. They were all manacled in the guardroom, but he said they should be brought out for fresh air. It was against regulations, but who dare turn down a suggestion from a member of the PNDC.”

“So they were brought out and sat on two benches, six of them. They were sitting there when some 10 minutes later, the member returned with his bodyguards, who opened fire on the defenceless dissidents, killing all of them instantly.” According to the narration, tears welled up in his (narrator’s) eyes as he turned round and walked away sadly.

Mike Adjei also narrated his encounter with Tekpor and Dzandu, two ex-military men executed in 1983 for their roles in the abduction and murder of three high court judges and an army officer on June 30, 1983.

Sharing a cell with them, Mr. Adjei got them to narrate how they came to be involved in the sordid deed. The story was that they were part of the operations wing of the PNDC doing dirty jobs, because they thought they were paying for favours done them by Jerry Rawlings.

Before the coup, Jerry Rawlings had signaled that he was planning something and would need them to play some roles later. According to Tony Tekpor, he understood it to mean that he wanted to stage a coup. So when the coup was announced on December 31, 1981, they knew that was the time their services would be needed.

“We were drafted in to do the difficult jobs. Arrest people, beat them up, and even kill when necessary. As soldiers, even though both of us were, strictly speaking, no more in the army, we had been trained to kill, and we felt very little compunction when it came to performing our duty well,” Dzandu is reported to have told Mr. Mike Adjei.

It would be recalled that all accused persons in the abduction and murder of the three judges and an army officer told the Special Investigation Board that at the time they abducted and killed their victims, they knew they were carrying out duties sanctioned by Flt. Lt. Rawlings and his PNDC.

My thesis in this article is simple. All these atrocities were committed in the name of housecleaning and putting this nation on track away from misuse of influence and corruption.
If these were the commitment levels of the head of the military junta and founder of the National Democratic Congress, who killed and seized people’s assets, why would he allow his own wife to take over national assets at the time he was the constitutional Head of State of this Republic.

When the wife was using the influence of her office, as First lady, to take over these assets, what did the revolutionary Rawlings do about it? The answer and the effect of Jerry Rawlings’ adventure on the slipping Ghanaian society today, will form the topic of my next article.
