Sports Minister Nii Lantey Vanderpuye has said the manifesto of his party, the National Democratic Congress, has more plans for sports than it may appear on paper.

The party says development of infrastructure is key to the general development of sports in the country. Speaking to Class Sports, the Minister said there were other sections of the NDC’s manifesto that capture how government intends to develop the various disciplines.

“Manifestos are omnibus things, but within the omnibus there are various sections that you take. You can say that we didn’t tackle sporting disciplines under the manifesto. We talked about infrastructure, because in Ghana that is our key problem. If you don’t have the infrastructure, no matter how many talents you have, you can’t develop the talent so what we are trying to do now is…in the manifesto we captured the issue of infrastructure but in the manifesto under sports, we have various sub-sections,” he stated.

He added that the University of Ghana was set to partially take over the running of programmes at the Winneba Sports College and would offer diplomas, bachelor degrees, and graduate programmes for deserving athletes.

“I concluded negotiations with the University of Ghana. The university will partially take over the running of academic work at the Winneba Sports College and then we will affiliate the college to the University of Ghana. They will award diplomas, certificates, degrees, and even masters in various areas of sports – sports science, sports medicine, sports administration, sports management, and also physical education…” he disclosed.
