There is a saying goes, "every mistake is a new style". Under this note, she could have maintain or practise calmness or coolness and direct the event manager to correct her name. I have a worse case where a female professor use to receive an award. Because at the time of presentation her picture was wrongfully presented by the video jocky, she refuse to come to the stage and take the award, whiles her name was mentioning. After a while she came to the stage full of anger and pick up the prize. Later on, i was informed about her reason.
In this case, what she did, was not correct at all. It might affect her business or reputation. It is also likely, that the management plan this to seek more public's attention.
In anyway, it is a subject for discussion.

Those of us from the old school know the significance of getting it right - spelling, especially of proper nouns like yours, presence or absence of punctuation, location of punctuation, where to place single-apostrophe quotes and where to place double-apostrophe ones.

Well , she also taught the students who were present and saw her behavior to walk out whenever there's a mistake and not to fix it . That was disrespectful and it's as simple as that . She could have used the platform to make that correction . People including me ,are still confused on the spelling for "Kuffuor/Kufuor/kuffor" , "Hillary/Hilary" ,"colour /color" , "Atta/Ata/Attah" , but all these are correct ; depending on where you come from , gender and whether you are using a British dictionary or American dictionary . A name is a name and you don't expect all people to get your name right , it's your your responsibility to teach people how your name should be pronounced or spelt correctly . I don't even know who she is but I guess I know what she teaches her children at home since, her daughter is even proud of what her mum did . Will she walk out on a doctor at the hospital if her name is spelt/pronounced wrongly ? Go to America and see how they pronounce "Sarkodie" but one cannot walk out on them ; it's your responsibility to correct them .

Just because a simple 'a' is added to her name, should she walk out on an event? She is therefore this she is therefore that. This seems to me the dominant thread of reasoning running through this forum. Most contributors who felt like this would have failed miserably if this were an exams. It sets out clearly that she has been battling this canker for a while with the literary world to spell her name correctly! Is this too much to ask of a nation so steeped in mediocrity and sloppiness we dare to defend it? This is a shot across the bow to all Ghanaians that she will not be a part of this cultural mindset where we have developed a tolerance for mistakes and an effrontery of shrugging it off to boot. Our leaders, who should take similar actions when matters of such nature occur, re Independence day brochure fiasco, have rather developed a 'dead goat' syndrome and become complicit in it's notoriety. I support her wholeheartedly as, after this action, no one is likely to misspell her name again any time soon.

Kofi Amoako, I think you should grow out of this partisan stance of yours. How on earth has the competence of our leaders influenced the misspelling of Prof's name. We must all learn to do things right as a people. We need to change our mindset about our country. Everything shouldn't be attributed to our leaders. We should be responsible enough to do things right as individuals. I'm sure very soon when you stumble and fall, you are going to blame it on the incompetence of our leaders. Let's build the nation together and stop waiting for some leader to build our nation for us. The developed countries were built by the people and not their leaders!

Can someone kindly educate me what the difference is between "Atta and Ata". Does the good professor have the letter "t"in her mother tongue. These are characters borrowed from the English language for our purpose and yet we are so particular about the way a name is spelled. We should be interested rather in whether in makes the name sound any different. If any combination of characters helps us to get the sound we are looking for, I believe that should be adequate! In English, they have Whyte, white, whyt and so many variations of the name white. They also have Stephen, Steven, John, Jon, and many more..
I am sorry but I personally think the professor over reacted to a simple issue. Most Ghanaians when asked to spell the name Atta will spell it Atta not Ata.

While one should not condone sloppiness in any form, it seems to me Ms. Aidoo's reaction is a tad too much. It is demonstrably lacking in finesse, grace, savoire faire; not to mention maturity and the tact that old age brings. For someone who has accomplished so much, one who is internationally known, and respected, you'd have expected her to act with a little more diplomacy -- like taken the cue to discuss the issue of getting names right, made a joke of it and moved on to the main reason of her presence: her being honored. After all, she was being honored for her work, the focus should have been directed on that, not this misplaced haughtiness and folly. Granted, one can get territorial and very personal with their name, but one misplaced "t" is nothing to work up all that mouth foaming froth about. JFK was once asked, during his Presidential campaign, if he towed the Catholic doctrine of an infallible Pope. He said he'd spoken to Cardinal Spellman, the then Archbishop of Chicago about the matter, and Spellman told him this: "well, the Pope may be infallible, but he always calls me "Spillman"! Now, that's a classy riff of a name joke. This woman should take a chill pill and may be a tot of Akpeteshie. At bottom, her outrageous reaction is symptomatic of the haughty "educated" elite in Ghana's ethically bankrupt and poverty-ridden society. She's an embarrassment to civilization and not worthy of the aborted honor they tried to bestow on her. Sad, sad, sad and a crying shame, too.

It really is off putting when people make mistakes at basic things; even this article on Ama Ata Aidoo has errors, I wonder if you noticed.
It's a bit disheartening that some really don't see anything wrong with the mistake and think it is just alright.
I go through CVs every now and again looking for potential employees but the kind of mistakes you see are appalling and then the candidate tells you that one of their qualities is "an eye for detail". Really? A little more time to cross check does not hurt; let's pay more attention please.

Just because a simple ''t'' is added to her name, should she walk out on an event? She is therefore this she is therefore that. This seems to me the dominant thread of reasoning running through this forum. Most contributors who felt like this would have failed miserably if this were an exams. It sets out clearly that she has been BATTLING this canker for a while with the literary world to spell her name correctly but most of you missed this very important point. Is it a case of not understanding what we read? She is simply tired of correcting these blockheads, and the CULMINATION is her walking out! Is this too much to ask of a nation so steeped in mediocrity and sloppiness we dare defend it? This is a shot across the bow to all Ghanaians that she will not be a part of this cultural mindset where we have developed a tolerance for mistakes and an effrontery of shrugging it off to boot. Our leaders, who should take similar actions when matters of such nature occur, re Independence day brochure fiasco, have rather developed a 'dead goat' syndrome and become complicit in it's notoriety. I support her wholeheartedly as, after this action, no one is likely to misspell her name again any time soon.

I will be the last to condemn both the organisers of the program and the living legend Ama Atta Aidoo. But with me I will learn from it.
(1) It is becoming unbecoming of Ghanaians trying to become whiter and British than queen Elizabeth. These days u see who spelt like Kofi as Quophi or Koffi. Trying as hard to fit into the western set up. Nothing wrong with fitting in. The Chinese and Philippines in order to fit in they complete throw away one of their names and pick an English name say from Ku to James. This type of irritation is soo common on television. I normally use Kofi Annan. Kofi Annan has lived in western countries greater part and even after retirement he still lives there that Kofi Annan has maintained everything African about him. He is the ORIGINAL Kofi Annan. If you can't pronounce it, thus your problem not his. (2) My aunty Ama Atta Aidoo is an original, global and niche brand of literature which is very marketable, she doesn't want any pirating or duplication of the product - The brand is Ama Atta Aidoo. Each part of the name means something special to her. I mean very special to her. Take it or leave. (3) It is not every person who is that flexible and that liberal. To the extent to Ghana here nothing is taken serious from misappropriation, stealing, corruption of funds in government and private circles is seen normal. Not so with the class of Ama Atta Aidoo. They take everything serious. Because they have put in the hours, burnt the midnight oil, discipline themselves in life always to take the highways of life. That is what their were taught and learnt. With Aunty they cannot understand why examination papers should leak from JHS via SHS to universities. People like sees it as an abomination. People like can't understand why such waste in our society yet we complain of poverty. People like her don't make excuses they must excel in all things. (Keep ur criticism and weaknesses) (4) The message aunty Atta is giving us a Ghanaians is to wake up from our slumber and be a little serious. (But) I would have thought that since Kinna was around and got on with the program, I would have expected my aunty to have pointed out the error and demanded the correction to be effected there and then. That I believe, will have been a reconciliatory posture which would have reflected her person and career as a poet, writer, scholar and academician. (5) Maybe, she might have said this generation don't want to learn. Let me leave a lesson never to be forgotten in life particularly in academic circles. Ama Atta Aidoo, am in love with your brand.

I remember my surname being spelt 'Peter Kofi Ezuah' instead of 'Peter Kofi Erzuah' in a visa given by the South African embassy in 2009. On leaving the embassy in Accra, I detected the mistake and discussed with some Ghanaian visa applicants around who felt it was an insignificant error. On a second thought I went back to the officials and I remember the remarks by one if them 'But the two names are not the same'. The visa was cancelled and a new one issued with the correct name spelling. It is important we take these things seriously.

As Ghanaians, where have our humanity, humility and sense of humour gone? This renowned literary scholar missed a fine opportunity to show why she is great. What a shame.

That is silly to walk out cos you can't build a nation with people who refuses to make corrections but walked away, she is not the best in terms of education and even the most prominent people who surpasses her make spelling mistakes, was she not taught by someone before getting to where she is now, did she ot make mistakes and corrections before getting there, that is irresponsible arrogants, perhaps how many mistakes does she corrects through dictionary before bringing a piece out hence Atta in ghana is the right spelling of our language so if she chose only one "T" then she must be responsible for her action and be ready to make corrections cos when I saw Ata, it was like aliens name hence her parent made the first spelling mistake by changing our name Atta to Ata.

Meanwhile the correct spelling of his name is ACHEAMPON and he ignored the error and submitted the application thaught that oh this is nothing but later he paid a big price for that error,Ghanaians should please learn how to ask people they are dealing with how they spell their names, so many Ghanaians up there are paying big price for such error, thanks

We allow mediocrity and indiscipline and when our roads are built with the wrong aggregate of cement to crumble in 1-2 years, or bridges are built wrong or electricity components left out that protects us from damages due to power surges, what do we do? I can cite many examples in last 12 years since having my own house built in Ghana! Even cement blocks being sold has very little cement and deliberately eicked and evil!
Do we give that to God and say "TO ERR IS HUMAN"?
Man was made to seek perfection and act towards God, the state of PERFECTION!
People being paid to do a job must do the right things and discipline is what Ghana lacks, in addition to deliberate evil and wicked use of wrong materials in building even houses for others!
God punishes those who try to cut corners and so please Ghanaians should open their eyes and deliver what they are paid for!
SHAME on the persons in charge and somebody ought to be fired for the mistake!!

Danny I feel sorry for you. You're arrogance could have cost you a job. As a person from Ghana living in USA, Americans have a hard time pronouncing my name. Should I get upset each time? The point is her was wasn't misspelled, they just added an additional "t" so what? So walking out made her a better person, added more credentials to her name. We have to call a spade a spade. This is foolishness and low. Doing all this in your honor and she screws it up because of a "t"?. This is the new LOW. Ghana wake up and smell the coffee. That's why we are still considered a 3rd world people. Lack of self control is bringing us dowm.

Am really disappointed i think the woman wasn't ready for the recognition..A whole people's role model very very bad. Even Donald Trump will not do this
She doesn't need such weak recognition. She is well celebrated. Accept the mistakes and learn from it. I call it growth and maturity!!!
Life goes on. The world doesn't revolve around her and neither does she give anyone oxygen to breathe. She can go to hell. Overrated and over-pampered.
Kinna Kintu has done more harm than good to her arrogant mother. If her perfectionist mother walked out of a programme simply because of addition of t to her name, why come public with it?
All because of an extra "T" in Ata? Unbelievable!!!
Thank you my mother for walking away.I have been wondering if Ghanaian journalist know what is proof reading. If one articles in Ghanaians journalists you can see a lot of spelling mistakes like dramatic Mahama ect ect ect.If ...

What the fuck are you talking about? What is the big deal if your name is spelt "Atta" instead of "Ata"? Should this minor mistake warrant the stupidity and idiocy she put on display?
Misspelling someone's name is a big deal. People have have been refused visas, access to money that is rightfully theirs, entry into another country, falsly imprisoned because their name was spelled incorrectly.
