There are various degrees of psychiatric and psychological illness and not all of them might even show any outward behavioral signs.
Please rather use the phrase: PEOPLE WITH PSYCHIATRIC ILLNESS (OR PSYCHOLOGICAL DISORDERS).

It is a range of emotions that affect they way we think and feel about ourselves and others and how we deal with life or appear to life. It also affects the way we relate with people, our ability to concentrate, take up employment and maintain it. In Ghana, it appears what we consider to be mental illness is schizophrenia. We tend to overlook other mental disorders. With schizophrenia, people hear voices or see things that are not there-hallucinations. For instance a person may hear a voice telling him to do something which may be harmful. This is called command hallucinations. People may also experience perceptions that are contrary to reality-delusions. For instance they may have the false belief that they belong to the Royal family or someone is plotting to kill them. Delusions and hallucinations are symptoms called psychosis. People who are psychotic are the ones who harm others because they hear voices that others want to harm them or have the belief others are plotting against them. Besides schizophrenia, we have depression, anxiety disorder, Bipolar disorder, personality disorder, eating disorder, etc. All these fall under functional mental illness and dementia which falls under organic mental illness. People with all kinds of mental illness experience anxiety. Depression when not treated can become psychotic. Most people who commit suicide suffer from depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. In Ghana, people may suffer from anxiety or depression but may not know what it is. These are mental health issues. They become mental illness when they stop you from doing what you want to do. For instance, if your depression is so severe that it stops you from going out, you become tearful because you are so sad, you do not sleep well, you neglect yourself, that means you do not bother having a shower and keeping self nice, unable to concentrate and ultimately stop you from doing what you want to do, then it becomes mental illness.
But what causes mental illness? First you must have a vulnerability which must be triggered by a stressful condition. The vulnerabilities are for instance having the condition in your family (hereditary), being abused as a child, and stressful factors include abject poverty, losing someone close to you especially through a sudden death, unemployment, bullying at school, trauma, divorce, smoking marijuana because it increases dopamine activity in our brains etc. The current conditions in Ghana make it easy for people to develop mental illness. Poverty, disappointment, death are all risk factors and these are rife in Ghana now. God help us.
