I clearly remember like it was only yesterday when I took on a shoe-shine job as a child among others like a paper bag seller and other low income street hawking businesses. Well, no one forced me into those ventures, but I did them in order to survive. I only earned just about enough to either buy my morning and afternoon meals or starved. The home or family only provided the evening meals for those with deprivable incomes. Yet this is considered child labour. Fortunately I only did these during term breaks from school but compared to my colleagues, I was one of the fortunate ones who had education.

It is easier to stop these children from working on the streets and deprive them from their hard earned meals which their families cannot provide for them, but does this intervention really arrest the problem? I understand the US concern, that every child should be given the chances and opportunities in life. I agree with any kind of help or intervention but it has to be pragmatic. Address the problem wholly, and not imposing starvation upon those children after they are forced to leave earning their meal ticket. If anyone had stopped me from working just for the sake of it, they would have deprived me of becoming what I am today.

Maybe it would be better for the US to stop this $500 million aid which has never trickled down to help neither these children nor their families. How do you even help the children alone without going through the family structure? Decades of abuse of successive governments have resulted into this deprivable situation which is not the making of the US government. They can only do what they can to help but the government of Ghana is not even prepared to help his own nation. Their agenda wrongly misplaced to deplete our resources unscrupulously including even this aid to help the poor children. I will always say, this is a cursed nation, that’s why we have wicked and evil leadership especially this NDC only a satanic apprentice of a government.

What you and the American government does understand is the Ghanaian socio-cultural system.

In America, no one will send his or her child to go and live with a relative somewhere. However this is a very common practice in Ghana. People always send ther kids to go a live with a sister, brother, uncle, auntie, grandmother, grandfather, etc., in some cases, even total strangers. We all know this but I don't think the American know this nor understand it. They leave in their own world and do things differently.

Some of these cultural practices will not change and people will continue to dispatch the kids to go and live with someone somewhere. If even you the Ghanaian don't get this, how much more the foreigners who have different ways of doing things and don't understand the cultural dimensions of our society?

The only way to alleviate this child-labour syndrome, what the USA calls "Modern Day Slavery" is for our economy to be vibrant and educational system improved. These 2 areas are the main reasons why people dispatch their kids to go and live with others, who in turn misuse them.

If you the Ghanaian don't get it, I don't expect the Americans to.

This child-labour thing is equally pervasive in others parts of the world, especially India and the Asia subcontinent but do you see America threatening them to stop the practice? No they don't because only stupid black people like us will be bullied around. America has many ills in its society, but that does not mean that if it has the power to influence certain backward behaviors in poorer countries it should not do so. Child slavery is WRONG, no matter how you slice or dice it. I do agree with your suggestions to use aid to improve the social programs that would enable these poor children to get a basic education, but please let us not try to justify this dastardly act. Children should not have to work until they reach the age of 15 or 16, and even then, there should be safeguards in place to protect them from exploitation which is very common.

Yes, it may sound like the US is dictating to the government of Ghana or to all the people of Ghana including the so called opposition parties in hiding on this issue of modern slavery, but in reality the USA is pinpointing to us of our failed responsibilities as parents and leaders of a nation that needs to be well managed by every party that takes the mantle of leadership.

It is time that we all in Ghana stop the foolish and village oriented poilitics of division, litigation, hatred against one another when in real sense politics calls for unity among the people in the good managing of the affairs of our dear nation. Inshort, this time the USA has come out well as a nation that we shall like to listen to because their views here are things much to be welcome by every rational person.

If the US taxpayers have money to burn in " kleptomaniac republics" with visonless political and traditional leaders advised them it is better to spend such funds in the USA. The objectives of this aid moneies you talk about is laudable especially in the ernergy area but you must as well bury your head in the sand because it will not make a dent in the social area you are trying to help improve.
Sorry you don't understand the history and culture of the people of Ghana. Slavery is in our DNA. We sold our folks to the Dutch and the English to take them to the Americas, didn't we? Despite modern life our cultural life is infested with "de facto" slavery though not "de jure." We live a life of pretent in coexistence with our chieftancy dispensation in Ghana.
Next, the Ghanaian middle class and elite cannot maintain their gaudy lifestyles without the labor of poor young kids from the villages. Despite compulsory education laws on the books kids( girls and boys ) are brought by these elites and middle class to come to raise their children and manage their household chores as " maids and house boys", with the promises to parents to send them to schools to acquire trade skills that usually never happen. The justification for this modern slavery is if the kids do not come to slave in their households , they will be worst off in their future life. In the situation I have just described regarding child labor in context of compulsory education, who is going to arrest, prosecute and jail who? The police, top civil servant, lawyer , judge , professor, chief? They are all in it together. Their wives will revolt if they act.
Human trafficking is an adult crime and must be prosecuted and and the criminals sanctioned. That should not be tied to specific aid. It is a global problem and require global solutions.
And back to the social problem of modern day slavery, Sir, have you noticed the model of "self actualization " in Ghanana since you arrived in Ghana? It is about the type of SUV and saloon cars you own, your house and the neiborhood you live in, the school your children goes to, ( go and stand at the Ablelemkpe junction and watch the cars that brings the children of the elite to school in the morning), the church congregation you are member of, where you go on holidays ( Dubai these days) with family , and the silly part; buying a doctorate degree or being made a chief., sub or otherwise is what the elites aspires to. Most people in the elite class wants to be referenced as , Nana( chief) , Doctor( purchased) pastor, prophet, archbishop and general overseer.? They claim to be Christians but condone corruption and slavery ; obvious, subtle or otherwise . Sycophancy towards the well to do in our society is sickening ; Daddy , Dr., instead of Owura (MR.) Some key opinion leaders in Ghana have offered their conscience for sale are afraid to cry out against wrongs in society. Ghana can't be USA for a while. We have many stomach politicians and journalists. No one is willing to die for principle or any behavior we can call "decent". It is all about lying to voters for a " better future" , getting control of the treasury, creating expensive projects, looting with impunity and sharing among themselves while the society declines . Afraid they might be ask to account for their decadence, the elite ask the clergy to pray for peace as if peace can be found in the holy books.
Mr Jackson please advise your government from trying to offer well meaning aid tied to societal reforms Ghana.That is not going to happen under this crop of elite and leaders and traditional rulers in Ghana. You can help us better if through your intelligence agencies you publish large account holdings and properties that our politicians, civil servants and some key Chiefs have stolen to hide in your BANKS and Real Estate industry. We can begin to see change in our society only when our leader can be held to account. That is when we can start the process of change for a better Ghana. If politicians are made to account for their wealth , your taxpayers money may do some good in areas most needed. Otherwise they will loot our treasury for you to come fill the gap.
If US wants to give us Aid, tell your Congress and State Department it must come untied because " the beautiful ones are not yet born"

2)Invite media to cover slavery stories.
3) Set up a specially trained police unit to investigate and lay charges for slavery.
4) Set up refuges for former slaves that help them live independent lives.
5) A Minister responsible should give 3 monthly progress reports to the press and TV. The web site should show statistics of efforts to stop slavery in Ghana.
It can be done. It just needs political will and effort. Just do it.

What is $500 million when some Ghanaians can easily dish out. Pls stop embarrassing Ghanaians and give us a break. You're in a safe haven. Can you quantify it in dollars?
