You guys know the clash is NOT on Thursday, that they're rather leaving on Thursday for the game on Sunday, but because you don't know that the order of words in a sentence can determine its meaning, you tend to write anyhow, thinking that everyone would know what you mean.

Here's the proper sentence, because it conveys the fact:

"The team is expected to travel to Accra before leaving ON THURSDAY for their CAF Confederations Cup clash against TP Mazembe" (ON SUNDAY, you may add).
