The genes for albinism are located on “autosomal” chromosomes, the 22 pairs of chromosomes that contain genes for general body characteristics. Humans normally have 2 copies of these chromosomes – one inherited from the father, the other inherited from the mother. For a recessive trait (like albinism) to occur, both of the person’s chromosomes must carry that trait. As such, albinism results from inheriting an albinism trait from both the mother and the father who often have normal pigmentation.
