The environmental issue is moot. The crux of Tarzan's argument is based on the fact that we don't have coal in Ghana to feed the plant. That is going to be a big problem. The reason why the environmental issue is moot is that coal is being used everywhere. US, Britain, Japan, Mexico and many more Countries are using coal to generate electricity. Although many of these countries are trying to reduce their coal consumption, the fact that they have been using coal to generate electricity means that an impoverished country like Ghana with perennial electricity problem can also boost its electricity production by using coal. But since we don't produce coal in our own country as many of these countries do, there is a possibility that the new coal plant being built by the Chinese may end up being a white elephant.

Its insane and plane stupidity for Ghana to be thinking about coal as an alternative source of energy. Yes we do have problems as a nation but to consider coal as an alternate to solve our energy crisis is not only stupid on the part of our leaders but also tells as how myopic they are. I have flown to Pudong Airport in Shanghai on a few occasions and the blanket of fog and haze that you fly through before touching down is a clear testimony of the damage coal can do to the environment. More so, the fact that China is one of the biggest emitters of Greenhouse gases tells you that coal is not a sensible choice. We must be despearate to resolve our energy crises but coal should never even come into our minds.

Dear Readers,
Considering the long term, I agree with Dr Brobbey (Tarzan). Coal is fossil fuel and once upon the time a resource for energy and still is. The talk now is renewable energy which Nuclear energy seems to partially belong to. My question is, why are we not talking Nuclear? Majority of advanced countries in the world have nuclear plants and are still building more. One would argue the disaster in Japan could have put a brake on further developments but Japan is building another plant. I can see the 'one touch' solution to the power crisis in Ghana is by going Nuclear. Nigeria has Uranium which is the main resource to turn the plant into producing power. Kwabenya Atomic Energy, please advise further on the future of Ghana going Nuclear.

Kudos to Anokyeba Wireko Brobbey.
I have called the whole Coal Plant project, the fleecing of Ghana aided and abetted by the Chief of Ho who owns Asogli Power with some Chinese.
The Chinese government has stopped new coal plants and is abandoning old ones. China is environmentally bankrupt because the Peoples government used bad technology to inflict diseases such as lung disease on millions of Chinese.
China has coal and needs to sell it somewhere for money and export their bad air and lung disease.
In comes Chinese-owned Company Shenzhen Energy Group, parent company of local independent power producer Sunon-Asogli Power. It's a match made in Lung Disease heaven.
The government of Ghana funds Asogli Coal Plant (recently opened by Mahama). And Ghana will import Coal EXCLUSIVELY from China.
It is a win win for the government of China; for the Chief of Ho and his Chinese fellow hustlers.
It is however, a great loss in money; great loss in future health of Ghanaians, especially those living near the plan, which is located far from Ho; and a total scam on Ghanaians.

dt's pathetic to hear that the NDC gov't would opt to use coal, the world's #1 killer of the Earth's ozone, as their proposed source of generating energy for Ghana. This tells a whole lot about NDC's incompetency! It's clear that John Mahama doesn't know "kotooo" he's just a big waste!!!
The Mahama-led NDC gov't is clueless and will make decisions that's absolutely silly! Talk about bringing floating power barges that would provide electricity at astronomical cost of power purchase by families and businesses. Ghanaian homes and businesses are complaining about their power bills; the first in its kind in Ghana. I pay .05cents per kilowatt/hr in Alberta, Canada equiv. 20pesewas. But God only knows how much it costs per kilowatt/hr for families and businesses back in Ghana?
The NDC doesn't have any ideas to make Ghana progress but won't admit their lack of knowledge and incompetence in office, yet they'd rather taunt Nana Akufo-Addo to bring out his ideas so they may attempt to steal it or copy. That's absurd! Get out of the seat of gov't because it's clear that the NDC can't do anything good for Ghana. Allow a better man, full of innovative ideas and vision to lead Ghana unto paths of great prosperity for all; that's the visionary Nana Akufo-Addo, the great son of SIKAMAN Ghana.
